Hmm, thought Ghost's album came out in 2011 and it didn't, I just didn't hear it until January. Well damn, that's my favorite from last year then.
So I'll go with Opeth- Heritage

I haven't been able to hear lots of new stuff this year, since I've mostly been playing catch up after having just gotten into so many bands with extensive back catalogs. So far though I would rank my 2011 albums like this:
1. Mastdon - The Hunter: Blew me away. This definitely has my number one slot. 2. Opeth - Heritage: Very different, but like every other Opeth album it has grown on me.
.....and that's seriously all the 2011 releases I've bought this year.

Ghost was released in October, 2010 in Europe, but didn't get U.S. distribution till Jan. '11. So you can count it for this year if you want. I won't tell anyone.
The latest Foo Fighters is gonna be a top contender for me as well.

The only album from this year I've heard in it's entirety is Opeth's Heritage. And it is spectacular!

More "progressive rock" than metal, but my album of the year is: OPETH - HERITAGE
No other album I've heard even comes close to this one in how much I've enjoyed it. I've literally played it almost every day since it came out and I'm not even the slightest bit tired of it. In fact it's probably my favorite record in the past few years.

I really need to get a physical copy of that. All I've got now is a 57 minute YouTube video to watch.
