I watched on youtube a Beatles tribute band...live...outside...afternoon... " The Fab Four " - and they look somewhat close.... but sounded spot on. Couldn't believe it. No way would I listen to them now...but 40- 45 years ago... I was struck by how each album I bought was good. And how they changed and changed with the times.

The way I see it is the Beatles came along at a point in rock history when Rock needed to be shaken up..Elvis was in the army, Buddy Holly was dead, Chuck Berry had massive legal problems, Little Richard had got religion and quit rock'n and generally the radio was filled with stuff like Paul Anka and Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee and the whole surf scene...So here comes the Beatles shakin it up..They had a different sound, a different look and were uniquely not American.. I like some of the early stuff like twist and shout and I saw her standing there but a huge fan..Not at all. The albums from Rubber soul forward to the end mean nothing to me...Bands I like from the late 60s would be more like the stones, The who,Jimi Hendrix, The Seeds, Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer..Not The Beatles..

While not my favorite, I own all of the records from The Beatles. I have to be in the mood for the White Album. I love Abbey Road, Rubber Soul & Revolver. When I am in a "hits" mood I'll play the red or blue records. As I said, they are enjoyable for the whole family. As for The Who, Hendrix and the other 60's acts it's stuff I have to play when only I am listening because no one else at home cares for that stuff.

I had the 45 single of Hey Jude/Revolution when I was like 4 years old, so I've been hearing The Beatles for most of my life. However, I don't think I *truly* appreciated them until I was in my late 30s and had many, many years of hearing their influence on just about everyone that came after. At some point the true magnitude of what they accomplished and what they inspired really struck me and it all just clicked into place.
When the grunge/Nirvana wave swept in, is when some Beatles-influenced bands got airplay, but because I was so into metal at the time and hardly ever listened to them anymore, I didn't know it at the time. SLOAN, OASIS, TEENAGE FANCLUB, etc were taking the Beatles blueprint and expanding on it.
In the 1970s, there was a hit song that radio DJ's were saying was possibly a secret Beatles reunion, but turned out it wasn't them. For years I was convinced it WAS THEM. Good timing, as it was after a ton of Beatles singles were re-issued (1976?)
... A few years later, BEATLEMANIA (a tribute / cover band/ experience) was touring, with daily TV commercials, and when you seen them, they looked almost identical.

Some of the older Beatles stuff (vinyls) were originaly recorded in Mono and should stay that way (IMHDO)
Which is why they released both a Stereo and a Mono box set of their remastered recordings a few years ago.
I think the later stuff like The White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be work best in stereo, but the earlier albums and singles seem more immediate in mono.
You could probably say the exact same thing about The Rolling Stones earlier albums.
In the LEMMY movie or one of the Motörhead documentaries that came out the past ten years, there is a scene where Lemmy is in a record store looking to buy a Beatles CD box set, and the clerk agrees with him that mono is the only way to listen to them.

I guess you can put me on the list then (if I wasn't there already LOL).
I just do not like the Beatles. I appreciate their impact on music but I just don't like their sound. I much prefer McCartney and Wings to anything the "Bea-uls" ever did.
Exactly. I pretty much can't stand the Beatles but I totally dig Wings. On a side note I prefer The Kinks over The Beatles.

Hahaha! I don't even remember posting that.
I've never been much more than a casual Beatle fan, but I have enough working knowledge of their history that I still get all the gags in the Rutles' "All You Need Is Cash" movie (and the "Be Sharps" episode of the Simpsons).

My wife caught me singing "Baby On Board" a few weeks ago to our daughter and I had to explain to her where it came from. Ha.
