I've always been merely a casual fan, but this thread has sparked an interest. I just listened to Revolver on YouTube, and I definitely see the influence they've had on modern music. It's like every style of music afterwards could be traced back to the Beatles in some way. They've got pop songs, proto-metal, proto-prog, psychedelia, and pretty much anything under the sun.

nope. it is quite easy. I dont think they are horrible by any stretch but I dont think they are really all that people ascribe to them.

When I was younger (teenage years, early 20's) I thought the Beatles were over-hyped and not deserving of all the accolades that were lumped on them.

However, maturity has a way of changing our perceptions.

After listening to jazz and other experimental music for 15 years I gotta say that The Beatles songwriting is about as sophisticated as you can possibly get. They literally wrote the book on just about everything...same can be said for George Martin's production touches which are still being copied constantly.

I'm finding that to be true more and more each day. Bands and genres I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot dildo back in the day (prog rock, Pink Floyd, Sinatra, jazz, etc.) are now sounding pretty good to me. And my 10 foot dildo.

original drummer Pete Best has a bit part in a comedy movie about a metal drummer kicked out of a band.
It stars Rain Wilson (from The Office) as the drummer, along with Emma Stone.

While I will always think The Beatles are overrated, I gotta admit they seemed to be hitting music that's more my style on the White album. And given that I like a lot of McCartney's early output with Wings, I always wonder what The Beatles would have become had they stayed around.

According to McCartney or maybe it was even Lennon...E.L.O. When a reunion was bantered about a bit in the middle to late 70's, I read where either McCartney or Lennon (maybe both) really dug what E.L.O. was doing at the time. They would've liked to capture something similar to that sound.

Yeah, I can see that. And that I would've most likely dug.

Jeff Lynne (E.L.O.) was one of the few artists that sounded like he really understood what The Beatles were doing and was able to build from that template in very interesting directions.

I heard "Revolution" the other day and I think it blew my speakers!

Man, sounds like they recorded that on an eight track stereo or something!

I just don't see how anyone can throw that overrated word around with one of the best songwriter combos (Lennon, McCartney) in the history of music, not to mention the vocals of Paul and John as well. Truly unique styles.

I am not really a major fan, but The Beatles are timeless.

I agree about the songwriting but I still think they're overrated. Plus I prefer the Jagger/Richards songwriting combo.

I do tend to like Beatles songs better when someone else performs them. Same thing with a lot of "timeless" songwriters. Bob Dylan is another example. So is ABBA for that matter; hate the band but there's no denying the songwriting IMO.

Funny you should go the "Stones" route. I won't call them overrated, and I won't deny the writing combo of Mick and Keith to be timeless as well, but I have never been a fan of them, I like a handful of their songs at best. I think a lot of their music is sloppy, and when I seen them in Atlanta back in 97-98 they sounded awful live.

I wasn't much of a Stones fan either until I saw them at Giants Stadium back in 95 on the Voodoo Lounge tour. Great show with all kinds of special FX, inflatible monsters, lasers, etc. Still the best concert I've ever seen.

Although the Stones went through their musical phases, I still love the bluesy material that isnt popular. I think their strongest material is the stuff you dont hear on the radio.

So The Beatles (read Apple Corps) are putting out a vinyl version of the all-albums box sets. It'll be new pressings of the remastered versions that came out recently.

My wife was like "You want one, don't you?"

I actually said "No."

Not because I don't want The Beatles albums on vinyl, but because I don't want them on NEW vinyl. I told her, even though the Beatles Geek in me was drooling, I'd rather seek them out one or two at a time at used record stores. Also, I don't want them all...just certain ones for framing. I'd never actually play them anyway. I've seen copies in decent shape at used stores for between $8 and $12 each. So if I could get Let It Be, Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper and Revolver for framing, I'd be good.

I framed my dad's original vinyl copies of Meet the Beatles, Introducing the Beatles and Hendrix's Are You Experienced. They hang behind the bar in the basement.
