He was only 27. He is the second active NHL player to die this year. New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard died in May at the age of 28 from a mix of alcohol and Oxycodone.

Tragic. I hate the Canucks, but Rypien was actually tough instead of just cheap.
He was a very technical middle-weight fighter. Always fun to watch. I will best remember him from the trademark rapid fire punches.

Also, Rypien's death was apparently a suicide. The sign that he took more than one "personal leave" from the Canucks is a sign that he was dealing with some serious problems.
