| Didn't really know where to post this but anyway, does anyone use this? Recently launched in the US. It's a free streaming program, pretty much works like iTunes (play tracks, create playlists etc.). You can pay £4.99 ($4.99 in the US) per month for unlimited streaming and no advertisements, which I have recently done. It's an absolute bargain considering the wide range of music they actually have.
If you haven't checked it out, then you can here:
http://www.spotify.com/us/
I've been using it for a couple of years and it's amazing. Great for checking out bands you haven't heard before and very good if you can't afford to buy CDs at the moment for whatever reason. The best thing is that it is perfectly legal and supports the artists and labels.

| LOVE IT. Don't care about the mobile version but as long the PC version stays like this, this is amazing. Listening to albums I've always wanted but haven't gotten around to buying yet plus I'm playing stuff I already own but I'm too lazy to look for them. | |

In time, they'll upload a whole lot of other albums as artists and record companies see that this will help their cause, and $5 a month is really nothing if you want the premium access. Listened to a few Death albums I've never owned, so I can't complain. Just the Muddy Waters/Bob Marley catalog alone is good enough for me. This site is incredible so far.

| i've subscribed to them for a while now. not much in the way of extreme stuff, but it's still growing. it's a great tool if you like to have a listen to something before you purchase. _________________ | |

| FYI many labels such as Century Media, Massacre, and some Metal Blade are opting out of this service. I would check before I signed up for it!

A wise move or a dumb move? I have a feeling it's the wave of the future. Opting out is probably a bad move. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

| If it's the future then those record labels have no future, so the point is moot.

| Actually it's rather annoying when labels opt out as you can have tracks saved to playlists that suddenly disappear. Recently the whole Firewind discography (apart from one album) was taken off and I noticed that the Liege Lord album Master Control was removed too.
What I also find annoying is the fact that they always seem to get artist names wrong. Take W.A.S.P. for example. Half of their albums are under W.A.S.P. and the rest are under WASP. A little bit annoying. Also i've been listening to that great glam metal band Vinnie Invasions Vincent. Wait, what? I would've thought they would use some kind of music database for this kind of stuff so it's suprising that they get so much wrong. Another one I can remember is when they put Joe Lynn Turner's solo stuff under Malmsteen. Overall though it's pretty good but they need to sort out these little annoying issues and also get more labels signed up!

| I don't understand the attraction to spotify. It is just a streaming service.
It doesn't replace buying a physical copy of an album with artwork, liner notes etc. which you can then rip in any format you want and play over and over for as long as your heart desires.

The attraction is that you can listen to music for a tiny amount of money each month. It's very easy to use and works most of the time. I don't think anyone here uses it to replace buying CDs (myself included) but rather just to try out artists and albums they we've never heard before, before deciding whether to buy the CD or not.

yeah you could also illegally download cds without having to pay anything if that's your goal. with Spotify at least you're supporting the artist in some way. no, it's not perfect yet, but it's still relatively new. it'll get better as soon as the industry adapts to it. which they will i'm sure. _________________

| Also, you don't have to pay but it makes it much easier to use if you do. It only costs maybe half the price of a new CD for a whole month, so hardly anything really. | |
