Really? Wow. I'll have to give that one a spin. I just don't remember any of the Sammy-era discs being as heavy and raw as those first four platters.

The Balance album with Sammy is also very dark, especially for Van Halen. 'Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do' is pretty heavy.

I agree. Fair Warning is real close. But the debut is lightning in a bottle of the highest order. Easily one of the best debut albums, pretty much regardless of genre, ever.
