The Dead Milkmen completed their new album...and it's been available for a month! And I missed it. Bummer. But I just ordered it, so I'm stoked.
First album in about 15 years. Sounds like a more serious album, with the socio-political kind of lyrics from the days of Big Lizard in My Backyard. The samples sound great.
Can't wait till this thing arrives!

Hell yeah! There are a few bands, like Before the Dawn, that I'll pay import prices for.
I just realized I never replied to you about the REM trade. Sorry, dude. Will do so soon.

They got back together in 2009. In fact, Rodney was supposed to write an essay for issue #1 of Shock Totem, but he eventually had to back out because the band got back together. I tried to be bummed that he wasn't going to do the essay, but I was too excited that DM had gotten back together. Haha.

Dang I want to check this out, I only really really like big lizard in my backyard though. Some of the other albums seem like they were trying to hard to be funny in places..dunno.

Trying hard? Man, that stuff is hilarious! Haha. Maybe it's a type of humor more suited for the times, though.

So these guys are putting out new music! Weeeee! It'll be a series of 7" records with two songs each. The digital download gets a bonus track, but the records come with download cards for the three digital tracks. So you get all of them. Love when bands do this with vinyl releases.
Anyway, the first one is out now, limited to 500. It's called Dark Clouds Gather Over Middlemarch. You can order it here:

So glad they got back together!

I only have two of their albums, both on cassette, I was surprised these guys reunited, completely unexpected.

Especially after Dave committed suicide. But I'm glad they've done it. There's something special about what these guys create, you know. It is solely theirs; no other band sounds like them. Even if they'll never be mainstream darlings making millions of dollars, it's gotta be a good feeling to know that you stand on a piece of artistic land that is all yours, you know.
At least I hope they feel that way. It'd be a shame if they didn't.

The thing about the Dead Milkmen for me is how strong their whole catalogue is. Loved the last release and really glad they decided to carry on. I'll be getting those new vinyls they are putting out.
I saw the Dead Milkmen live way back in the eighties when I got dragged to a show. Till then I thought they were a hardcore punk band. It still is one of the most fun shows I ever went to. I don't think they played ten minutes before I knew I was going to be a big fan.
To this day I still am more than likely to refer to Depeche Mode as Depeche Commode (and I'm a fan of theirs). And after the last record I still laugh to myself when I'm in Best Buy and see a geek squad guy.
One of my favorite musical momentos ever was a signed Dead Milkmen concert poster. It got destroyed in a basement flood. Sad thing was I was looking for a place that could properly frame it at the time. Still kick myslef over that one.

Same here. There are so many things I reference in life that come from DM songs. Hell, I have a story called "The Candle Eaters" in The Gate 2: 13 Tales of Isolation and Despair, and in it there is this:
“Did you see that?” Matt said, nearly screeching the words. “Jumpin’ Jesus on a pogo stick! Did you see that?”
Haha. Most people would not get the reference at all, but I love that it's there.

And it's pretty cheap too. I've ordered both for 18 shipped. I almost hope for their sake they are playing funny with the limited numbers just to pump the sales.

So before heading out with some friends today, the wife and I stopped at Newbury Comics in Norwood. This is a newer, bigger store, and they often have bands playing. So I walk in, some band is up on stage and the singer is talking. I'm paying no attention to them, just perusing all the Record Store Day vinyl, and then the band kicks into a song.
If there was video of my reaction, it would probably be hilarious. At first I pause, because it dawns on me that I recognize the song. Then I straighten up, pause again, because I know that voice. Then all the pieces fall into place...
HOLY SHIT THAT'S THE DEAD MILKMEN!
I turn around, and there they are up on stage, Rodney shouting out the new tune "Dark Clouds Gather Over Middlemarch." I couldn't believe it! I haven't seen them live since high school.
Sadly they played only two more songs before their set was over. I totally missed them. Such a bummer! I had NO IDEA they were playing. Why Newbury Comics didn't promote the shit out of them being there is beyond me. Unfortunate.
But hey, I got to hear them play "The Woman Who Was Also a Mongoose," which was brilliant! =)

The Dead Milkmen are one of those bands that I know of but never really dug in past their greatest hits package. Songs like Punk Rock Girl didn't really grab me, but I love Beach Party Vietnam and Bitchin' Camaro. I will have to dig in a little more I think.

Was there at least a decent crowd for them? Too bad they didn't do a signing.

Unfortunately I believe they got unfairly saddled with being a joke band based on their "hit" songs. Mojo Nixon is the same way. There is so much more going on with their albums. Sure the humor is always up front but there is more than just the obvious joke. I highly recommend Soul Rotation as a place to start digging in.

Yeah, when humor is involved people tend to ignore everything else. It's also more wit and sarcasm than humor, but most people don't get that, either.
Soul Rotation is definitely a good one to start with. It was probably their most mature until they released The King In Yellow in 2011, which is a much more mature effort.
If you enjoy one Milkmen album, you're likely to enjoy them all.
