Subject: Is Alter Bridge metal? Tue Mar 30, 2010 6:24 pm
I've heard a few people here say they believe that Alter Bridge is real metal.
I don't agree.
This is all in fun, and in no way am I trying to argue with anyone. That's not why I'm posting this. I'm just curious.
Do you think Alter Bridge (and bands of their ilk, like Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Nickelback, etc) are actually metal bands?
I can agree there are some elements of metal in their stuff ... but would you go as far as to call them 'metal'?
Like I said ... it's not a big deal. Just for fun!

Alter Bridge have nothing whatsoever in common with the bands you mentioned with them. They arent full metal, but they are closer to metal then anything else.
Every band has mellow moments but that doesnt make them alternative does it? You mention them with Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd, why? Nickelback is mainstream pop/rock with one or two aggressive sounding tracks. Puddle of Mudd is pretty much the same thing.
Alter Bridge bases its music around Mark Tremonti's guitar riffs and if you listen to them there is nothing alternative about them. The guy even said he left The Damage Done off the album because he didnt want it to be too heavy of an album.
I see what you are saying Metallic but look at your options. Of course they are not a straight up metal band and of course they have softer moments with fragments of metal. So does 100's of other bands. This is a business bands like this have to throw in the big hook here and there.
I am with Mc on this I think they are just a Hard Rock band with some pretty metal influenced riffs and solos thanks to Marks influences like Metallica, Slayer, Morbid Angel, and Celtic Frost.
I will not vote because I feel they are neither of these and like MANNY said before who cares if the music is good its good and with Alter Bridge its great IMO.
Now thats freaking heavy...

Toho based on how much similar music we like, I would think Alter Bridge would be a band you love. I think you really are missing out with these guys.

I can't get passed their Creed connection. That's one of my most hated bands in history.

I don't really like Alter Bridge, but they're close enough. I'm an inclusionist when it comes to things like this. And it doesn't mean Alter Bridge are ONLY heavy metal. Probably more than just that.
Like Led Zeppelin is one of the most famous classic rock bands in the world, while also being a 70's proto heavy metal band.

Are you serious dude? The modern day Zep?
I actually can bring myself to say I enjoy Alter Bridge ... and that they are a good alternative metal band. There I said it. But ... 'alternative' is the key word.
But to compare them to the mighty Led Zeppelin?
I mean ... wouldn't you think that award would go to someone more worthy?
Just askin' ...

Musically they have everything Zep had and more. Im not the biggest Zep fan but when it comes to separating yourself from the pack thats pretty much what I hear when I listen to AB. Thats where I make my case as modern day Zep. Zep was doing it better then most and thats what I get with AB.
You have to understand we all hear bands differently and I have never heard a band that puts every bit of talent they have together and make amazing music.
I still dont feel they are in any way alternative but hey who am I to judge. They are just hard rock in my eyes.

After exposing myself to more Alter Bridge tracks, I still agree with my original assessment; alternative with some metal vibe.
I'm not a genre nazi though so people can classify this band however they want. I just generally don't care for their music and in my book it falls into the alternative category.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
I do like Alter Bridge though ... but that is over in another area for me. That's over in my 'non' metal section of bands I like.

This is a classic example of why I file my CDs alphabetically. I'll never understand how some people separate their CDs by genre; there's just too many genre-hybrid bands.

I feel the same way, I am not even sure what metal means anymore anyhow since even fans can't agree what is metal and what is not.

I have my CDs arranged into 5 different sections. It's not hard for me to do.
I have one rack that is: power metal / progressive metal / classic metal / gothic metal / doom metal
one rack is: thrash / death metal / black metal / extreme metal
one rack is: glam metal / hard rock / AOR
one rack is: alternative rock / classic rock / electronica / punk / pop-punk / other
one rack is: industrial / gothic rock / synthpop / world / new age
And that's how I do mine. Then within each, they are all alphabetical by band and chronological by album, within band.

I'm always sure of what metal is. Not everyone may always agree with me. But I'm always sure on my own terms at least.

Alter Bridge is not even close to the greatness of Led Zeppelin!
If Alter Bridge was around during the birth of metal... they would have been a forgotten footnote.
