To elaborate...
Ronnie Van Zandt just walked onstage barefoot and sang his songs. He didn't have to rant or posture, it was "understood" he could probably beat your @$$.

I’m pretty sure Phil was influenced by Mike Muir and Henry Rollins back in the day. He just went a bit overboard on Vulgar Display.
If you seen and talked to Phillip in the Razor White and his early years in Pantera, you'd catch my drift. He reminds me of dude from Hatebreed, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Vanilla Ice, and that over the top phoney bravado act. Muir and Rollins are just angry and psychotic (IMHDO) far from being tough guys, They are probably just as phony?
Check out the documentary “Surf Punks” from 1981 before the first ST album. Muir was Billy Idol with a sun tan.
At some point, Muir adopted the “cholo” look and projected himself as a badass. The front cover of “How Will I Laugh” also goes for that image. Sure… his main gimmick was the “crazy” thing, but he tried to go Gangsta on Lights Camera Revolution. He had the tough guy thing down long before Phil’s transformation from CFH to Vulgar Display.

One thing that Anselmo may have in common with Rollins is that they both grew up in tough areas as scrawny white kids. Rollins in Washington DC, and Phil in New Orleans.
I guess they needed to put up that facade to cover up their vulnerability. A lot of people do.

But Phillip DIDN'T have that tough guy persona in Razor White or the first few years in Pantera. Can't speak for Rollins, never witnessed anything.
Phil shaved his head, got some ink, and hit the weight pile. There are thousands of white boys that did the same while in prison. They validated themselves (or didn't) by doing what they were either told to or had to for survival in that environment.
If you have to continually tell EVERYONE how much of a bad @$$ you are in song lyrics and interviews... Guess what? You are not

Yeah, they’re tough areas. Not to be confused with your war-zone. But make no mistake, getting stabbed or shot in the city is the same outcome… dead is dead.

It’s not really a pissing contest of where is the toughest place to live. There is places in Africa where tribes will mutilate other villages with machetes. Parts of Mexico City with the cartel related gangs and some ghettos in Brazil are also known to be pretty rough.

Rex said in his book that it was basically an act. He said Phil was influenced by Mike Muir’s image.

Vulgar Display of Power is the only album that Phil had “tough guy” lyrics. Songs like Mouth For War, A New Level, Walk and Regular People (Conceit) were the ones that suggested it.
On the albums after Vulgar, Phil just talks about his demons and being the “Kings of Metal”. But there has always been some emotional vulnerable songs about loss like Cemetery Gates and Hollow and they did the mellow Planet Caravan cover. It wasn’t always full throttle macho.

My main reason for liking Pantera was the music (especially Dimebag’s playing). Phil’s persona and lyrics were not a deal breaker for me. I actually liked it when I was in high school. But everyone knows that Dime, Rex and Vinnie were not tough guys…
Party animals? Yeah!

I was actually kidding. I fully understand what you mean.
I have traveled to a lot of places and visited many of those areas. Things can get quite dangerous there.
