| MC gave me this idea from his question in the 'interview thread' from the Fun and Games forum.
What are your top 10 favorite genres of metal? No non-metal in this thread.
Personally, I like pretty much every form of metal ... but my top 10 would be:
1. European Power Metal (melodic) 2. American Power Metal (thrashy) 3. Traditional Heavy Metal 4. Thrash Metal 5. Glam/Hair Metal 6. Gothic Metal 7. Melodic/Symphonic Black Metal 8. Melodic Death Metal 9. Progressive Metal 10. Traditional Death Metal

| I am 8 short, it's pretty simple for me 1) stuff I dig 10)crap I don't The label/genre' concept makes things more complicated than it needs to be. To me if the majority of a certain genre' you have heard falls short than you'll be second guessing yourself when you hear the label in regards to a band without ever listening to the songs. Where I live, folks trip on me alot. One day I will have on a Grateful Dead tie-die and the then they'll see me in a Hirax or a KISS shirt some other time. I like what I like and the flavor of the music holds no merit to my ears. _________________ | |

Anything beyond that (in terms of genres and subgenres) is just excessive

To make a top 10, I'd just be throwing stuff in that wouldn't necessarily be a "favorite".

| 1 - European Power Metal (I use the word "flower" at times, but more in protest. I think it has a negative conotation I don't care for. When Metal "purists" snobs like ToB use the term, its derisive and should be taken as the jab that it is.) 2 - American Power Metal (Cage, Rob Rock, 3 - Folk/Viking/Pagan Metal (when it's not simply folkish Powermetal) 4 - Traditional Heavy Metal (Dio, Onward, Crescent Shield, maybe the entire NWOBHM thing...just Metal) 5 - Speed Metal 6 - Thrash Metal 7 - Glam/Hair Metal 8 - Melodic/Symphonic Black Metal 9 - Melodic Death Metal 10. Traditional Death Metal - Quote :
- Bestial black metal

I agree. At first I started calling it flower metal as a joke. But nowadays I'm starting to get pretty pissed when someone starts making fun of my favorite genre. Scott, I think your list is closest to mine in terms of favorites. We both got the two kinds of power metal - followed by trad metal and thrash not too far behind. Good taste dude. Great minds do think alike!

| 1. Classic Hard Rock (mid 70's metal) 2. Acid Rock (proto metal) 3. Melodic Rock (pomp & aor) 4. Melodic Metal (flower, power, euro) 5. Retro Hard Rock (recent) 6. Prog Metal 7. Doom 8. Alternative Metal (grunge & a little nu) 9. NWOBHM 10.Glam & Sleaze Metal I didn't list Traditional, because that's split between Classic, NWOBHM and some Melodic. I also didn't list Stoner, because some of it is Retro and some of it is more Doom. | |

This makes me smile because it's one of two rock/metal genres my 67 year old Dad recognizes 1 - Acid Rock (I'll never forget when he yelled at me to turn down that "acid rock." It was his 8-track I was listening to!) 2 - Satanic music (pronounce Say-tonic)

| 1. Thrash Metal (and every related sub-genre of it) 2. Speed Metal 3. old school Death Metal 4. American Power Metal 5. Classic Heavy Metal 6. NWOBHM and that's about all for me. I like some assorted songs from other genres, but not enough on the whole for it to be listed with the rest. _________________ You're cancer, you can't be the answer, you're killing me

| I love all genres of heavy metal (not that I like every band, but there is good music within any genre). Other than Thrash and Death Metal being at the top there are bands within Traditional metal, Power Metal, etc that top my all time favorite band list, etc. Especially now when genres like Death Metal and Power Metal have quite a few subgenres to them. Good metal is good metal. | |

That's all I really listen to or own.
Genres I need to explore: Power (I've heard some Theocracy and Menahem and dug it) Doom (to date only tried Place of Skulls and it's "okay" at best for me) Gothic (I admit I'm not sure if I know what that really is)

Ever listened to "Holy Blood"? That will give you an idea of what folk-metal is. I consider it a legit genre although it is rare I see somebody refer to it.
