I think there may have been a thread similar to this, but only in regards to metal. This is all-inclusive.
The main one I had in mind was Lenny Kravitz's cover of The Guess Who's "American Woman". TERRIBLE cover. The Guess Who version was an energetic hard rock classic. This is a bland, lifeless abomination that seemingly overlooks everything that made the original so beloved. I love ya Lenny, but you need to pick your cover tunes more wisely.
What are some other ones that totally suck?

Schkoobidoo, clean out your ears. Lenny did a great job with this and made it his own.
Cover songs that suck? Way too many to list. Any death metal tribute albums to bands like Iron Maiden usually do the trick.

Lenny did an AWESOME job with that song!!! He also did an AWESOME job with Deuce, making it his own.
See Toad The Wet Sproket's version of Rock And Roll All Nite for a god-awful cover!

One cover song that everyone and his dog seems to hate, but I love - is Judas Priest's rendition of "Johnny B. Goode". I was sure someone here was gonna hate on that one by now.

You beat me to it!!!! I also don't like Twister Sister's "The Leader Of The Pack" - that one kept me from buying Come Out And Play when it was released!
No, I think it sucks!
Here's another cover that should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, been allowed to happen:

Are you saying you do agree with me and like that Judas Priest cover? Or that you don't like it?

Sheryl Crow's cover of 'Sweet Child of Mine' makes my testes retreat into my lower abdominal area and hide for cover.
The 1st time I heard Kravitz's cover of 'American Woman" I didn't care for it, but it grew on me. I like the way he funked it up.

I was never a big Guess Who fan, so I sorta liked the Lenny Kravitz version. Not his best song, but he did a terrific job on it when I saw him perform it live.
My vote probably goes to Marlyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams." But, I pretty much hate everything Marlyn Manson does.

Holy crap! I forgot about these two clunkers! I love both Judas Priest and Twisted Sister, but these two covers do suck royally. Marlyn Manson I expect to suck, but these two? I guess it is a greater offense.
I am a casual fan of Marilyn Manson but him covering an AC/DC's 'Highway To Hell' was a sin. Manson isn't worthy enough to sit on one of Bon Scott's port-o-potties let alone cover any of the great man's songs.

I was just going to add that one!!!!!
How about KISS coverinvg Petra with God Gave Rock N Roll To You II? JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!! It's a cover song I don't like. They did cover the Russ Ballard song well, I just don't like the song!

Grave Digger is one of my favorite bands, but they shouldn't be allowed to do a cover, ever.
U2 covers... Believer - Like A Song.... Dark - Pride (In The Name of Love)...any of them really... no, no, no, and no.
Celtic Frost - Mexican Radio. I love this band..and that just should never have happened.
Most covers of older power metal songs like Kill the King or Eagle Fly Free.....where the band completely messes up the feel and it sounds awkward all the way through..

Love Believer's cover of Like A Song, but then I was never a U2 fan, so that may be why the bastardized thrash approach doesn't bother me.
Also love Celtic Frost's Mexican Radio. I actually prefer it over the original song.

I agree... all these covers are pretty awful. It is a tricky thing to cover a song, trying to make it your own without forcing a sound awkwardly onto it. In these cases, these bands have failed.
