Cannibal hasn't just been around for 20 years, they are also the biggest selling death metal band ever. Cannibal Corpse rules though!

Hi guys. Glad to have found this board!
As far as CC being "thrash metal", they're definitely not. Although their first few albums (as did most early death metal) have a very distinct thrash metal influence. Especially "Eaten Back To Life".

welcome, I would agree with this, I always found a lot of German style thrash influence in their writing. The guttural vocals is what really set them apart from the thrash scene.

I actually Cannibal Corpse, I find them amusing and like Freddy I am amazed they have had a career that has lasted twenty plus years. Also very cool band to catch live.
I might like them if they actually sang. Hell, their lyrics are from anatomy books half the time but the "WOOOOOAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!" vocals have to go.
Half their charm is their cookie monster vocals and the fact that you can't understand a word the errr.. singer is singing, of course you can't expect a Freddie Mercury type vocal performance from a vocalist who is nick named Corpse Grinder.
False
Half their charm has been their unique style of brutality. (not br00tal)
The other half was shock value lyrical content and album artwork.

"Hammer Smashed Face" is fairly thrashy.

Not me, your opinions are very often opposite of mine and I've gotten used to it. I think most people's criticism of you lies in the fact that you come off as if you're the music expert and if you don't like a band it means they're no good (and vice versa). I doubt that is your intent but that is how you come off. As for me, you are who you are and you're not affraid to speak you're mind, which I respect (even if you're wrong most of the time ).
As for me, CC bores me as does most grindcore bands, but I do respect their longevity and place in history (and I don't doubt that they know what they're doing musically).

I was always under the impression that there's really no difference between the two, that grindcore was just another type of death metal (at least in the early 90s that was the situation).

However, I really like Barnes-era Cannibal Corpse, so screw you guys

Grindcore has a crust influence and usually more political themes.

See the genre confussion rears it's ugly head again. When I got into metal in the early 90s, grindcrore was many times interchangable with death but that was also before the internet and the information age. So now I "know" better and all these genre differences are comming to light (usually at the expense of my ebarassment -a while back with the Hammerfall thread and now with this one).

I feel the same way, I just like bashing genre confussion. Just like the hard rock or heavy metal arguments, it got old as soon as it began.

Grindcore has more of a punk/hardcore influence.
I once saw Vengeance Rising described as "Grindcore" (on the back of the Hot Metal 4 video tape - "Witness the Grind Core Heat of Vengeance Rising!") and thought that was rather odd, as they were a death/thrash band from what I knew of'em.

Thats nothing, I had a compilation tape once that described the Vinnie Vincent Invasion as thrash metal.

I think that probably had to do with Roger being obessed with wanting VR to be called a grindcore band like Godflesh....especially in the later years of VR.

death metal can have grind elements, grind can have death elements. but as a whole, grind is more punk influenced & death is more thrash influenced. hope that clears things up.

It does. I guess the common trait shared by both genres caused them to be lumped together back in the day and those of us new to metal (especially those who didn't fit in with the rest of the metal crowd) were never taught the difference.

Death metal is thrash metal on steroids. A LOT of steroids.
