I liked The Alarm, The Call, and Big Country. I think all those bands had much in common with old U2.
Well The Call and The Alarm did; I don't hear it in Big Country though.
The Alarm especially sounds like early U2; especially the later Alarm albums. The first couple sound like a cross between U2 and The Clash.

I Love so many of those '80s bands. Duran Duran, Devo, Depeche Mode, Human League, Cocteau Twins, The Church, The Alarm, The (English) Beat, The Jam, and I could go on forever.
Yes, I love the Church... "Under the Milky Way" reminds me of my senior year in High School. I used to play that album, Starfish, quite a bit. Actually, I will still listen to them.
I love the Big Country self-titled album too... every song is a winner. They are considered a one-hit wonder, but really the whole album is worth a spin. The same is true of Modern English. Everyone remembers them for "I'll Melt the World", but I actually enjoy the entire album where that single comes from, After the Snow.

I bought that Modern English just for the hit and ended up loving the whole thing.
I've always loved Echo & Bunnymen and Love & Rockets. I also have recently discovered how much I like Fine Young Cannibals which I never ever thought could happen.

I was the other way around with that Modern English. I bought it for the single and ended up not liking the rest of the album. Too arty or prog or something; all I know is the rest of that album didn't continue in the same vein as the single IMO.

Wow cool seeing all these bands being thrown up. Shows it was more a time and place more then a sound.
One of the greatest singles of that era has to be this little known gem........

Does anyone remember the pop star "Black"? He/they were known mostly for "It's A Wonderful Life", but they had about 20 songs that were better than that IMO.

Wasn't Madness part of the two-tone sound? I always lumped them in with The Specials.
