Two of my friends started a new cover band playing 80's new wave. They do not have keyboards and they Rock the songs out a bit more, they take out the wimp-ness. They go by the name of Philo Beddoe.
Wow, I'd sure like to check them out...they sound great. Here in El Paso there was a band that did something similar with Disco. They updated the sound a bit and added a little more muscle to the songs. They were actually pretty good. Do your friends have any videos up at YouTube?

Nothing on YouTube, they were to get something up this week but nothing yet.
They play, Berlin, Plimsouls, Romantics, INXS, The Cure, Go Go's, Outfield, The Motels, David Bowie and from The Prouducers the play She Sheila which is one hell of a song.
I am trying to get them to play The Fixx - One thing leads to another.

Wow! I ran into this searching for something else. Ahhh! Those early days of MTV. How can you not like the first two Duran Duran albums. I discovered Japan about 10 years ago... what a band!!!! Me, I Disconnect With You and Cars(before it was covered and overused) by Gary Numan
I always preferred this Vapors song to Turning Japanese(which always felt like a novelty song anyways):
It was one of the first videos that I saw on MTV when it came on that day.

The only New Wave trend I adopted into was Oingo Boingo's Halloween shows in Anaheim every year back in the early 80's. I can listen to songs today that I couldn't stand back then.

Mi-Sex was awesome! I could put a compilation of my favorite Mi-Sex songs on a continuous loop and be content for a long time.

I have "Computer Games" on vinyl. And I loved Fad Gadget's "Ricky's Hand". Back in the day, there was a local DJ who played New Wave/Punk stuff for 3 hours every Sunday Night. That's where I learned about these two bands plus others like Dead Boys, The Boys ("Kiss Like A Nun"), Pointed Sticks, Radio Stars, Tuff Darts, etc, etc.
I give you Tuff Darts' "Your Love Is Like Nuclear Waste"
And Radio Stars' "Good Personality"

New wave is way too broad a term for me. I like some of the bands mentioned (mostly the gothy or punky or synthy ones.) but it's too broad an umbrella. Are the Cure in any way similar to Duran Duran, Men Without Talent, er I mean Hats or the Pet Shop Boys! I like the Cure and The Pet Shop Boys in their own way but I don't think that either could ever be considered New Wave. I think that it was used as a catch all in the U.S for lots of bands that were hard to catagorise.

Was listening to Dale Bozzio's - New Wave Sessions today. Brought back alot of squirmy feelings. If you were 14 in 1983 - you know what I mean. Soundtrack to some of my earliest "experiences" with neighborhood girls... Along with the Human League. Get even chubbier than I already am when hearing songs from those bands.
