We've all heard at some point of the term "Sophomore Slump" and how it applies to a band's second album completely sucking after a huge debut. What sophomore releases do you think defied that? I can think of a lot but I'll list only five.

Judas Priest-Sad Wings Of Destiny
Tesla-The Great Radio COntroversy
The Doors-Strange Days
Captain Beyond-Sufficiently Breathless
Jimi Hendrix Experience-Axis: Bold As Love

oh, crap. I tought it said "Albums that DEFINED sophmore slump" but it says DEFIED. oops....my bad. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Aerosmith - Get Your Wings
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Motorhead - Overkill

I'm tempted to put Pantera's Vulgar Display on the list as well, but I know it'll spark some debate as whether this was really their 2nd album or 5th(?). And I don't have the engery to go down that road again.

Just mention it as their 2nd major label album.

OK, many of mine have been already listed, so some repeats in this list:

Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
King's X - Gretchen
Galactic Cowboys - Space In Your Face

A whole bunch of Christian Metal bands DEFIED the slump and actually did BETTER albums:
Barren Cross - Atomic Arena
Bloodgood - Detonation
Bride - Live To Die
Saint - Time's End
Messiah Prophet - Master Of The Metal
Leviticus - The Strongest Power
Deliverance - Weapons
White Cross - The Hammer & The Nail

Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath

Alrighty-then. 2nd major label release it is.

Good call on Skid Row, Joker. That one kills their debut (also good though).

Did Rush's debut really make that much of a splash? I always thought it went pretty much unnoticed (except Working Man)

I don't think it sold huge amounts initially, but gained in popularity later down the road. Anyway, I view "sophomore slump" more in terms of artistic merit and not sales.
