| It seems to be how Marc understands things. He's not happy unless he's being disagreeable but I still like him. Right Marc? :kickbutt: Put the bat down now. |

You know none of these bands we're considered "power metal" at the time, back then it was just metal. Actually, I remember hearing these bands described as Power Metal...that's what my friends and I called it anyway. |

| I will never, never, never, ever, ever, ever understand how Saxon, Accept, Judas Priest, Barren Cross, HammerFall and their likes can be labeled power metal. Theey are the very definition of heavy metal! Just like Iron Maiden, Dio, Scorpions etc. _________________ | |

| Some that came to mind: Grave Digger Brainstorm Enola G ay Dream Evil Hammerfall Sinner Primal Fear Symphorce Angel Dust
and if they still be considered power metal Metal Church Vicious Rumors Nevermore Recon Vanize
and an old band I only recently discovered: RapidFire (CA)'
I guess I consider bands like U.D.O., Accept, Judas Priest, Armored Saint to be traditional heavy metal. Early Grave Digger is traditional heavy metal. Even a band like Metalium seem more traditional heavy metal than power metal to me. Power metal in the 80's were those bands that rode a fence between heavy metal and thrash. Metal Church would be the perfect example. In the 80's Ultimatum would have been considered power metal. Modern power metal is much, much different. _________________ ULTIMATUM - TOO METAL FOR WIKIPEDIA!

BINGO! Tell him what's he's won, Johnny. That is why HammerFall isn't power metal. Nor do this description fit on Iron Maiden, Dio, Accept, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Silent Force, Rob Rock, Barren Cross, Sacred Warrior or any of the other erroniously (sp?) labelled bands here. The original post asked for the original power metal bands. NOT the bands that is power metal today. _________________

| You don't think Barren Cross rode the fence of heavy metal and thrash? |

Not at all. They were more on the fence between heavy metal and hard rock. I don't recall every hearing a thrash influence in that band at all. |

| Wouldn't "Walls Of Jericho" qualify? I haven't heard it since the 80's, but I seem to remember it being pretty thrashy. |

Melodic speed metal, detuned. Yup. I'd go as far as to ditch the melodic part too. hen Walls of Jericho was released, we called it speed metal, just like Agent Steel and their likes. _________________

| I repented using the P.Metal word on this forum a long time ago because it makes people so anal. But I'll try one more time? Nasty Savage-s/t Sanctuary- Refuge Denied Anacrusis- Screams and Whispers or probably too "euro" but- Trance- Power Infusion Oz- Fire In The Brain Way too euro? Or too early? Sinner-Danger Zone Sortilege-s/t Overdrive-Swords and Axes for the record though, P.Metal in my world is a very large and inclusive genre that I insist on calling "Heavy Cheese". | |

| If we're talking about classic power metal, then it'd have to be Metal Church's S/T, hands down. For newer stuff, I don't have a specific favorite above all, though a few top-draw albums come to mind:
Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory Sonata Arctica - Silence Blind Guardian - A Night At The Opera
There are a few others I know I'm forgetting, but those are albums that I love. If you guys don't mind a bit of prog-power inclusion:
Theocracy - Mirror of Souls Menahem - Angels and Shadows
