Confession time

this is truly one of the greatest message boards on the web I mean we've just dived throught some pretty heavy topics and no one began flamming anyone or whatever

My 2 cents - agree with you on the worries about the education system. My son just started kindergarden, and I am thankful that our school district is one of the best in the country (Loudoun County, VA). The county raised the teacher's pay to grab the best teachers for the other counties in the DC area, so they have had a choice of the best teachers. The are already teaching reading, spelling, math and writing in kindergarden here, which is great. Kindergarden isn't fun and games here (thank God!). They also have computer lab once a week (my son is already pretty good with a mouse - those age specific games and webkinz are good for something!)

Still, schools today do teach to a test. The one thing that gets me is when I hear teaches saw they worst thing about no child left behind is that they are rated on their performance. I have no issues with that - I don't want the bad teachers teaching my kids!

IMO, teaching is one of the most underpaid occupations in this country. What's more valuable than the education of the next generation? Of course, I might be biased because my Dad was a teacher.

People always say "Yeah, but teachers only work 8 months a year". Well that's not entirely true. The good teachers also constantly take continuing education courses and/or work in the real world over the summer to stay current (which is what my Dad did).

I just can't think of a more valuable contribution to society than educating the generations to come.

No, it just means you go through 12 grades and actually get 11 grades worth of education (assuming you attend school every day you're supposed to).
