| I know I'm not considered an important member on here, but I must admit that, although I listen to metal occasionally, I wouldn't consider myself a huge metal head. During my early-mid teen years I was caught up with a clique that thought all music that wasn't dark, heavy or alternative was pretentious and loser, but in my later years broke out of the mold and began to find more in common with 'boring', down to earth, conventional music. I guess to some extent it was bound to happen as that stuff the angry kids listened to and their respective crowds often rubbed me the wrong way. I always thought many rock bands in this vein were too gimmicky. That just wasn't me. I don't consider myself to be brutal or wild. And honestly I don't have much metal in my collection period, besides all the Ratt CDs and a few others. And most here would consider me a wolf in sheep's clothing for preferring time 'wimp music' like Chicago or Hootie & The Blowfish over Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath. Still, I don't mind hearing some good old-school metal from time to time if they happened along my way. But that's not why I'm here.
There is one reason why I respect this community and continue to frequent the forums. I like learning about genres and their history, pioneers, influences, etc. regardless of how much I dislike it period. I don't like death metal, punk, or noise but I still like having knowledge of the music so I can make recommendations to friends or people I meet whenever based on what I consider 'reliable sources'. Also helps for finding anything rare out in the wild that I could possibly sell, like an autographed King Kobra CD I auctioned several years ago. I also have No Life Til Metal linked on my blog because I like Scott's backstory as well as his dedication to his collection and hobby. Don't think I'm trying to be demeaning to you guys for preferring the genre, but I just had to make it clear and hope I don't mislead people into thinking I'm an expert.

| (Bangs Thor's Hammer on ground) INFIDEL! THOU ART NOT TR00! WE CAST THEE OUT FOR THOU MUST LISTEN TO TR00 GRIMM KVLT METTLE AND ONLY METAL METAL METAL METAL!! NO TREND! NO CORE! NO POZERS! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!! But seriously folks....Hard rock & metal probably make up a good 90% of my listening choices and my CD collection but I'm not averse to occasionally going "off the reservation." Hell, I'm listening to the "Forrest Gump" soundtrack as I type this and I recently paid actual money for a CD by the JaneDear Girls (granted, I mainly bought it because of the cover) but obviously I'm in no position to talk sheeeit. Listen to whatever you want, life's too short for genre wars or for worrying about what others think of your musical choices... | Nothing wrong with Chicago (i like both the "rock" years as well as the 80s power ballad era). Heck, one of my guilty pleasures is 80s soft rock like the aforementioned Chicago, Starship, Toto, Richard Marx, Phil Collins, and Bryan Adams, i even own the first Michael Bolton album (though to be fair, that one is actually more AOR then the adult contemporary guy he later became). | |

I agree, those are all good. It was actually through being a J-Pop fan and listening to Japanese west coast-style artists like Akira Terao or Omega Tribe that I went back to the west to see who influenced them. Also, if the mods deem it appropriate, this thread may perhaps be moved to "Let the Music Do the Talking".

| I mostly listen to hard rock and metal, but I like many things outside of that. Listen to what you like, ignore what you don't.

These guys would seem to agree... In seriousness though, this is about having fun with music. We debate, we argue, but at the end of it, we're fans and we're here because we have fun with the music and dig talking to other people who have fun with the music. Some people get uptight about who the "real" fans and "real" metalheads are, but metal (to me anyway) was always culturally about sort of being left of center - hanging out on the periphery and looking for other torqued off people who were also a bit weird. Accepting the weirdos and outliers kind of goes with the territory.

| Music is made to be listened to, Period ! Some people have different kind of ears, a different type of brain, and they are attached with different sets of wires. Roll with it and if people give you grief....they deserve an atomic wedgie or something to that effect. _________________ | |

| Nothing to be ashamed of, I enjoy pop music like Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, etc.
Also enjoy modern rock bands like Saliva, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Powerman 5000, P.O.D., Godsmack, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Avenged Sevenfold and Nickelback.

| Variety is the key to happiness as far as I'm concerned. Enjoy whatever music inspires you and don't waste a second worrying about what other people think.

| I think most members here listen to genres other than metal.
I too have stated many times that I'm in no way a metalhead; I'm a "hard music' head. My favorite genre is glam/sleaze metal but I like everything from industrial metal like Ministry to jazz like Lee Ritenour to pop like Bruce Hornsby to melodic punk like Screeching Weasel.
I know there are a few here who adhere to the "All Metal, All The Time" credo but I think most of us are all over the genre map. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I honestly don't care what other people listen to, be it metal or not. All that matters is if you genuinely love your bands.
Having an open mind doesn't mean being a better person. I've always been open to other bands and genres not commonly explored, but I'll always have my preferences before anything else.
I also listen to pretty much metal, and Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Ted Nugent, and Slipknot aren't metal bands by any stretch of the imagination. |

What's so wrong with liking Nickelback? I'm surprised that's the band you're bothered I like and not say Limp Bizkit. And yes, I do kind of like Killen.
