| I'm almost, almost categorical inclined to know the various Genre/sub-genre of Metal Music. The list has grown into a colossal listing for the Types of Metal that is out there for the Fans to identify and relate to. Personally, I use the terms loosely for the label to identify the "Sound", then I listen as my final judgment. # Primary heavy metal subgenres
Black Metal Death metal Doom metal Folk metal Glam metal Gothic metal Groove metal Industrial metal Metalcore Neo-classical metal Nu metal Post-metal Power metal Progressive metal Sludge metal Stoner metal Thrash metal Pagan Metal Grindcore Orchestral,Symphonic Melodic Death Melodic Power
2 Cross-genre terms within heavy metal
Alternative metal Avant-garde metal Christian metal Extreme metal Rap metal Symphonic metal Viking metal |

| I generally eschew genre labels. I think it's far more useful to compare bands' sounds. Band "A" sounds like a cross between Band "B" and Band "C" with a little of Band "Z" influence. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I like it simple too. I prefer shops that organise them in one section titled "Metal" too. |

I prefer shops that organise them in one section titled "Metal" too. Even that gets iffy IMO. Bands that used to be considered metal, often aren't classified that way now. AC/DC for instance. When I was growing up, they were metal. Now, more often than not, they're considered hard rock. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Keeps things simple. Sounds good to me! In principle I agree but that's not very useful when trying to describe a band to someone who has never heard them. That's why I go to band comparisons instead. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Metal isn't the only type of music with an over-abundance of sub-genre B.S. On the jazz front you have:
Swing Traditional Big Band Bebop Hard Bop Post Bop Modern Cool Jazz New Thing Avant-Garde Free Jazz West Coast Jazz Soul Jazz Third Stream Fusion
etc. etc. etc.
Sub-genres give me a migraine. |

| Genres and sub genres all sucks, people get so hung up on labels they will refuse to listen to certain artists if they don't fit a particular genre, or worse they get bent out of shape if you put a band in genre they don't feel they belong in. This happened to me on this board I started a thread on Stone Temple Pilots in Metal Forums and I was told STP is not metal blah, blah blah, ok fine but what do you think of their music? Anyhow labeling is bad in any aspect of life, and as most of you have stated , there are two types of music good or bad. | |

| I like genre and labeling. In all forms. People especially. That way, I know to avoid the Irish. | |

The smell of 'em should be incentive enough to avoid them. |

| I love genres and sub genres. Only problem is that most others seem to use them wrong! _________________ | |

| I only use genres to separate music in my Media Player and for general discussions but for the most part I avoid them. | |

Of course. That's why there are 2 different names, to trick you. Luckily you were bright enough to avoid falling in that snare. |

The distinction is academic since both styles suck. IMO. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.
