What is your favorite genre of metal?

It’s hard to say…
I went with classic/traditional, but it’s about a tie with thrash!
Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, Dio, Motörhead and Accept are the “forever” bands! I could add Trouble too (because they were not pure doom).
Classic thrash is also something I love. The “Big Four”, Flotsam, Testament, Exodus, Overkill etc…
I can’t leave out my favorite Christian metal bands… The Crucified, early Tourniquet, Believer, Mortification and Deliverance. But even those bands are not simply “Christian bands”… some have stylistic differences (like progressive metal, hybrid, death/grind and crossover thrash).

Going by % of my collection it must be:
Power metal (From Euro/Flower to Viking to Teutonic to American like Cage or Jag Panzer) Melodic Metal (Ten, most of what Jorn does, Tyketto, PC69) Traditional and Thrash tied Death (in many forms) Black(ened)
Since Christian metal is thematic and not a style, I didn't count that, but I do love tons and tons of it.

Hard to say
I dig Eluveite, Panopticon & Tennger Calvary, but don't really care much for any other "extreme folk metal" bands.
The Saxon albums for the past 25+ years (maybe more) have traditional, power, speed, and pop metal tunes on each release. (IMHDO)
I enjoy a lot of the old 80's & early 90's Christian Metal, but can't get into any of the recent stuff. Is Mortification "Death" or "Christian"? Is Stryper "Christian" or "Glam"?
Dig select old school thrash bands, as well as a handful of newish ones. There were and are many, many mediocre thrash bands.
The genre labels are meaningless to me
Like Jeff sang in "Call It What You Want"... "It's All Music to me"
So after running' off at the mouth... I vote for "other" cause "Metal B Metal"

Really hard choice, but went with thrash. Classic metal is a close second today, tomorrow it might get my vote

I could probably pick a few bands I like from almost any sub-genre. I also like the 80’s “glam” metal like Motley Crue, Ratt, LA Guns and Skid Row.
Industrial, early 90’s Florida death and a few doom bands are cool too. Never cared for Norwegian style black-metal… except “A Hill to Die Upon” (and they are considered the hybrid moniker “blackened”)

My collection is all over the place - classic, thrash, glam/sleaze, etc. I just say "if it's got a good guitar riff and an attitude, I'm in."
I've never been able to get into death/black/grind stuff though, cuz the growling vocal style irritates the hell out of me. Some great players in that scene, but the vox always kill it for me.

By the way, I agree that "Christian" isn't a music "genre." It's a descriptive term.
Stryper and, say, Horde may both have Christian views, but in terms of musical style they're miles away from each other.
But that's probably a discussion for another thread...

Probably a tough choice because I like a lot of bands most of the genres listed but if I had to choose, I guess I'd go with classic, and the genre I like the least would be death (the vocals kill it for me).

That’s what I was trying to say. It’s a belief and theme, not a particular musical style.

I like this type of metal. I guess it leans more towards glam. Is Malmsteen glam ?

I agree but the list I looked up had it listed so I used it.

My choice as well. And I was going to write pretty much what you wrote.
