That's the weird part. I only had Windows Defender for protection because I don't engage in "high risk behavior" so I figured I didn't need anything else. I never download anything and I don't visit shady web sites (other than this one). Must have picked it up from an email attachment someone sent me.

I saw a thing on the news recently where this sort of thing happened, and the person fixing it added a bunch of stuff they shouldn't have. Do you trust this person?

And why can't you remove it yourself?

It's down in the registry. I was able to quarantine it but when I did that the PC froze. I looked this particular trojan up on the web and it seems the only way to get rid of it is manually delete all the files it has corrupted. The person looking at it is a tech support person for my company so I assume they know what they're doing.

At worst, I'll just format disk and reinstall the operating system. There's nothing irreplaceable on it.
