I don't really like much anything off 'Unia', but I always thought 'tree' was sort of a sad word in itself. You know? Maybe. I dunno.

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit (about the lynchings in the south during the 30's)

This is a chilling song. Billie would close a set with this song, singing it center stage with a single spotlight and would refuse curtain calls after it. And she did this in white clubs before civil rights. A huge example of music as a protest.

One of my favorite sad songs is "Don't You Cry" from Kamelot's Karma. It was written for Youngblood's dad and makes me think of mine who passed 20 years ago. Khan's vocal is beautiful on this song.

My father passed away in April, when I listen to " In Memory" from Black Sabbath, it now reminds me of my father, I believe that Iommi wrote that about the passing of his own father,

Some more:

Shadow Gallery-Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember (this may be the saddest, but it has some close competition)
Shadow Gallery-Hope For Us?
Shadow Gallery-Christmas Day
Sonata Arctica-Shamandalie
Sonat Arctica-My Selene (again more in lyrics than music)
Spock's Beard-Open Wide The Floodgates
Symphony X-Candlelight Fantasia (mostly the chorus)
Tela-Changes
Tesla-Paradise
Testament-Return To Serenity
Thunderstone-Spread My Wings
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-What Is Eternal
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-The Moment
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-The Dreams Of Candlelight
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-I'll Keep Your Secrets
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-The Dark
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-After The Fall
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-This Is Who You Are
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Who Is This Child
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Final Dream
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Chrismas Cannon
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Find Our Way Home
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-The Snow Came Down
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Dream Child
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Ornament
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Old City Bar
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Back To A Reason Pt. 2
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-What Child Is This
Trans-Siberian Orchestra-Different Wings
Van Zant-Friend
Vince Niel-Forever (even sadder when you remember the song is about his daughter that died of cancer)
Warrant-Bitter Pill
Warrant-I Saw Red
Bon Jovi-Dry County

TSO songs cause me to tear up especially when I sing them. Paul O' Niel and Jon Oliva have a great talent for emotional songwriting.

Oh, and Hurt (I only know Johnny Cash's cover)

How is Simple Man a sad song?

Not arguing, just curious.

I find it more of a "life lesson song"; "live like this".

Yeah, that is a sad song. It's basically a eulogy for a pathetic man.

Well, my wife's 17 year old brother died in a car wreck two summers ago and his favorite group was Skynyrd and he was also a very Simple Man, by the songs standards. The first time that we drove by the roadside memorial Simple Man came on the radio (that kind of stuff always happens, weird) and needless to say it was very emotional. So it's all in how you interpret things and what playing in the background of your life when something memorable happens.

Anyway, two songs that I think are very sad are:

Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle
Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle

'Sleeping Sun' rules! Though I just sort of see it as more subdued, ambient..more calm sad I guess than out and out sad. I've never heard the re-recording but I'm afraid to...bands need to stop that..

I was listening to Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet yesterday and realized that "Pick Up the Bones" qualifies as a sad song. It's about the Holocaust. Very poignant song.

For me the entire song is sad because it marked the end of THE gretest radio stations to ever reach DFW, 99.1 Z-Rock. It was appropreate (sic) because when the song ended, the station faded to black. The next moring, in it's place was a Tejano station (as if Texas didn't already have enough of those Rolling Eyes ).
