This is a chilling song. Billie would close a set with this song, singing it center stage with a single spotlight and would refuse curtain calls after it. And she did this in white clubs before civil rights. A huge example of music as a protest. One of my favorite sad songs is "Don't You Cry" from Kamelot's Karma. It was written for Youngblood's dad and makes me think of mine who passed 20 years ago. Khan's vocal is beautiful on this song.

My father passed away in April, when I listen to " In Memory" from Black Sabbath, it now reminds me of my father, I believe that Iommi wrote that about the passing of his own father, "An empty place where you used to be"

TSO songs cause me to tear up especially when I sing them. Paul O' Niel and Jon Oliva have a great talent for emotional songwriting. Oh, and Hurt (I only know Johnny Cash's cover)

| How is Simple Man a sad song? Not arguing, just curious. I find it more of a "life lesson song"; "live like this". _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Yeah, that is a sad song. It's basically a eulogy for a pathetic man. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Not arguing, just curious. I find it more of a "life lesson song"; "live like this". Well, my wife's 17 year old brother died in a car wreck two summers ago and his favorite group was Skynyrd and he was also a very Simple Man, by the songs standards. The first time that we drove by the roadside memorial Simple Man came on the radio (that kind of stuff always happens, weird) and needless to say it was very emotional. So it's all in how you interpret things and what playing in the background of your life when something memorable happens. Anyway, two songs that I think are very sad are: Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle

'Sleeping Sun' rules! Though I just sort of see it as more subdued, ambient..more calm sad I guess than out and out sad. I've never heard the re-recording but I'm afraid to...bands need to stop that..

| I was listening to Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet yesterday and realized that "Pick Up the Bones" qualifies as a sad song. It's about the Holocaust. Very poignant song. | |

For me the entire song is sad because it marked the end of THE gretest radio stations to ever reach DFW, 99.1 Z-Rock. It was appropreate (sic) because when the song ended, the station faded to black. The next moring, in it's place was a Tejano station (as if Texas didn't already have enough of those ).
