| So I've only heard three songs... The Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse, and Cyanide... I like them in that order. I bought them all on iTunes. Is the clipping something you hear on the cd? They all sounded good mixwise to me. | |

| You should hear it on The Day and My Apocalypse. I noticed it on the files the band put out before the release and on the CD today. |

That's not something that I shouldn't have to do. I'm trying to clean it a little too. I'm showing the album average volume is 102 db. WOW! That's the loudest I have seen. Its ridiculous. I found the offending frequencies. It's a little drastic but it removes about 95% of the distortion. 1. First lower the volume of the entire wave by 2.5db 2. Use a paragraphic EQ. 3. Set a center frequency notch at 10khz 4. Width of 0.9 Octaves 5. Then cut that notch by 8.5db. Almost all of the distortion is happening between 8khz-11khz, so that notch works well. Of course you'll probably want to do some other eq tweaking afterward, but this cleaned off all the high end distortion. Now I'm playing around with trying to get rid of some of the bottom-end mud and get a little more bass out of the mix. |

http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm See article Detuned posted - makes sense now. It's not so much the mix, but the mastering. Clipping bassically "cuts off" the top and bottom end of the sound range recorded in the studio and mixed on the master tapes to make the sound as loud as possible on the CD. I'd love to hear a DVD Audio of the CD using DTS

Yes. I've done recording, mixing, mastering, audio for video post production, live sound, etc. |

| There's also some low frequency distortion that I've noticed on a few tracks (primarily The Day That Never Comes), so I'll have to keep playing around to try and correct for that as well.
In the meantime I'm hoping to hear a copy of this on vinyl sometime soon, if it's mastered any better I'll buy it and sell this CD. |

| I picked it up for $5.00. I think the packaging sucks, but the music is very very good to my ears. I had to turn the volume down a bit. I am playing it on my Sony Walkman CD player through Bose on ear headphones. These are better than the tri-ports which are over the ear. I've owned them as well. They are not the noise cancelling ones, I didn't feel like spending $300.00 at the time for headphones.
I don't know if I can get better sound playing the CD through my computer. I run Linux on my computer and I use Amarok as my music player. If anyone else runs Linux and knows of a better player, I am all ears.
Could someone enlighten me please. I am starting to see a huge trend back to vinyl. Is vinyl better than a CD? It seems that when CD's first came out everyone made such a big deal about CD's being better. Now I wonder.

Thats a bunch of Yes it is. UA was a masterpiece, but DM isn't bad. Easily couldve been the follow up to ...And Justice. But, I dont find it as impressive as it was built up as. What were you expecting, "Master of Puppets II?" Come on now. No matter how hard a band tries, they can never reach their musical peak ever again. For all the hype it did receive, there was no way this would be their greatest album. Just be thankful it isn't "St. Anger II."

| I don't even compare Metallica and Megadeth anymore. One has been great since they started (with the exception of Risk) and the other hasn't put out a good album in 20 years. Both latest releases by these bands are great in thier own way I think. | |

| Yeah, they got their mojo back, but now they need to learn to control it. Not every song has to be 8 minutes. |

| Isn't that why they did the Black album like they did? At least partly. I read they realized they were losing the fans attention halfway through a song. |

I think most of those decisions were "Bob Rock". I never heard anyone complain about their song lengths prior to Justice. |

| I think Metallica were the first widely popular band that had a lot of songs over the 6 minute mark. They may think that part of a "return to the roots" would ideally include continuing the longer song length. It sure as hell didn't work on St. Anger, but I don't think it is such a bad thing on the new album, just a teeny complaint of mine. |

| I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Very progressive, and yeah, it does sort of sound like a Justice follow-up. 2 complaints: too long, as Spec said. That can just ruin an album for me, like Maiden's "A matter of life and death". I still haven't listened to that one all the way through. Other complaint: while I'm glad they've returned to doing guitar solos, most of em' suck IMO. Just listen to the one on "the day..." | |
