I consider myself a metal adict. I wear jean jackets with bands patches and pins, metal church necklace and band t-shirts proudly of my adiction.

"As to the metalheads hating punks, I for the life of me can't understand that at all. While I'm not a punk fan (though I haven't hated the punk I've heard) I understand how imortant it was to the history of metal. Iron Maiden would not have come into being without it. It was because Steve Harris wanted to bridge the gap between metal and punk that Maiden was formed. Not to mention many other metal bands influenced by punk."
Well is like the MTV hardcore guys that think that are the heaviest kids on the block and old school metal sucks are the ones that represent the hatred from metalheads to posers. Well I think that is what happened around that time with the punkheads. Remember that punks are different on these days than in the 80's

Listening to "metal" since getting introduced to it in the summer of 1978 when a school chum turned me on to the sounds of Van Halen, Rush, Judas Priest, and many more at another friends' house. I have had metal as the soundtrack to my days ever since. So, I would say yes, I will consider myself a metalhead.

“ You can’t get enough with a heavy appetite “ I remember an interview with Axl Rose. Aka Bill Bailey. He said he liked Elton John. Never liked Axl after that. My collection of music is 90% metal. For four decades. I often wonder how I’ll appear to people if I make it to my 80s 🦽

Very old thread. But the answer is yes, I suppose. I listen to heavy metal. I find it to the best and most appealing music to my tastes. And I don't hide it. I talk about metal and I've even kept my hair long all this time.
However, most metal bands I hear I don't care for.

Heavy Metal is my main passion. I love listening to it, discovering new bands and buying the music.
I may not look metal, don't have long hair nor tattoos, but my heart is made of steel.

Funny to see a post from one of Spectrefate's many deleted accounts still popping up after all these years.

Yes I consider myself a metalhead, but I do listen to other stuff. Mostly metal and classic rock. The classic rock I listen to often means towards the harder bands though, so there is that. Then I think, well I like classical music too, but usually only the fast pace thrash types of classical. So ummmm yeah I'm a metalhead.

I really enjoy metal but I am not sure the criteria that makes one a 'metalhead'.

To get into the club, you must have burned a church, killed a poser, and eaten his liver.

Nope. I like hard music.
Expanding on what Spec said, I like punk and a lot of "metalheads" hold punk in high disdain. I also like industrial, Celtic and various other forms of music that most "metalheads" wouldn't listen to.
I wrote this 12 years ago and nothing has changed.

Long ago when I trying to be a rockstar, then later as a session dude... Pretty much surmised most of my existence musically. I practice double kick and blast beats to keep up my chops, but mostly do classic rock stuff in a covers band anymore as far as playing with other musicians goes. Still listen to metal quite a bit I suppose? It falls into the 40% bracket, hardly any newer bands though.

Whenever I use the word "metalhead," people kind of scoff and show little interest. If I say that I'm a "hard rock and heavy metal enthusiast," it get some good conversation rolling.
Same thing goes with film and other arts. Sure, I'm a cinephile, and even a bit of an audiophile for that matter, but do I use those tags in expressing myself? They feel too exclusive in the first place. I want to invite people into my world, not alienate them.

This is me to a "T". I like being a bit a mysterious in my life, so people can't peg me. That doesn't mean I don't wear a bands T-shirt or have my metal music blasting from my car. Having said that, my music interests go beyond that of just metal. Like Rob Cavestany stated in an interview a little more than a year ago, "I can't start off with Slayer in the morning." I'm the same way, generally speaking.
My interest in the horror genre is always amped up this time of the year, but I would never consider myself a horror fanatic. I grew up on it in the 80's, so there's all that wonderful nostalgia which renders me powerless and less critical of stuff which is probably not all that good when one breaks it down. I love all sorts of cinema, and the closer it hits to reality, most likely it's something I will enjoy the most.

I would have identified as one years ago but not anymore. I'd rather be known as a Musichead or something. I just love music and I'm really tired of the gatekeeper bullshit you find in much of the Metal community.

If they are alienated by the term metalhead, screw 'em.
