There's a big difference to me. The S/T is sort of in a Bad Company vein with more acoustic guitar while "Pigs" was much more raw and electric.
Been awhile since I've listened to Pigs myself though although I listen to the S/T fairly often. I just remember my first impression of Pigs was "what happened?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did they have different vocalists on each release?

Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading something in RIP! magazine that they did switch vocalists.
I'll go down to the archives and check...

S/T - Gary Jeferies - Vocals Pigs - Tommy Dean - Vocals
Yep! Different vocalists. And according to the liner notes, all but one songwriting credit between the two albums is credited to "Asphalt Ballet". That could explain why the albums sound different. The second vocalist had a different "musical vision".

I would call them Def Leppard clones more than Ratt. I love the solo on "C'mon Eyes" from I am the night album. They were a fun band onstage when Terry was singing for them. Always thought it was ironic that Terry was let go cause labels said they'd never get a deal with him up front and he joins Lord Tracy and they get a major deal long before Pantera got their break.

Holy Soldier. First two albums-melodic heavy metal. Third album-grungy modern rock.

Like this one needs to be mentioned: KISS....many times....unfortunately, they had a few run ins with metal's enemy....trends
-from Love Gun/Alive II to Dynasty (overblown costumes and some disco-ish tunes) -from Dynasty to Unmasked (contemporary adult pop rock) -Unmasked to Elder (wow....Paul looked like a member of Duran Duran) -Unmasked to Creatures (OH YEAH! that album is beyond incredible....wasn't a trend, but they were trying to make more money) -Revenge to Carnival of Souls (some people say it's a natural progression, but it's not...it's like Alice in Chains)
Of course, these are all awesome albums.....but not as good as the other stuff

Celtic Frost.
Although the first three albums all had their own personalities, they still had the underlying gritty darkness of Tom Warrior's vision.
Then Cold Lake came out, and holy shi-yite was it a change. CF decided to create a glammish, hard rock style, and the fan boys shat their pants.
Also, I would also say Krokus. Krokus originally started out as a Yes-like prog rock band. But when metal started to become popular, they changed their style and became the Krokus we know today.
Same thing with Europe. Originally they were, like Krokus, a prog rock band. But Joey Tempesta decided to change over to melodic rock/metal.

I think that's why I ditched the first one. I bought Pigs, liked it, then went backwards finding their other release. When I heard the s/t debut, I didn't like the vocals. I guess that was the reason. I dunno. That seems like a hundred years ago now.

But Phil never wrote the music for Pantera. Anyone that has two working ears can listen to the first three albums and see that Power Metal or Cowboys From Hell—and what came after—were albums that showed a natural musical growth. There's so many people out there that insist that Phil joined the band and Pantera changed overnight and totally ripped off Exhorder. Why? Because Phil was a big fan? I think, at a minimum, for this to have even a smidgen of truth, Pantera would actually have to have sounded like Exhorder—and they never did.

Silverchair is another band that has changed most recently from Diorama to Young Modern they went from just great rock to almost Electronica.

Wildside & Sven Gali for me,
they both put out excellent debut's "Under the Influence" & "Sven Gali" and then release follow up with two piles of shite that you wouldn't even use as beer mats, namely "Wildside" & "Inwire".

Why? It's well known Phil was a huge fan of theirs and Kyle Thomas was doing that thrash style before Phil so... i'm comparing more voice wise than music even though Pantera's music drastically got heavier when Phil joined. Phil hung around at shows like Exhorder and Dark Angel.

Well, it can be argued that their vocals are similar, though I think that's a stretch. And like I said, the band did not get drastically heavier once Phil joined. Those that say that have clearly not listened to the albums that came prior.

Wasn't drastic at all, it was a progression from Diorama to Young Modern. Young Modern is essentially Diorama but more stripped back less bombastic. The electronica comment can only apply to the single Straight Lines but even that's pushing it. The Dissociatives and modern Silverchair have practically nothing in common musically.
The biggest change could be from their 3rd album they released in 1999 to Diorama. But even that was progression cause the 3rd album showed uses of string arrangements that became more prominent on Diorama.

It's a crazy conspiracy theory in the league of the Pantera/Exhorder one.
Downset to my ears have more in common with Biohazard than Rage Against The Machine. And it could be argued that Biohazard begat Rage Against The Machine and Downset in that loose style of music.

I would have to say that Young Modern, while not extremely drastic, it was a big leap, and it doesn't sound all that natural of a shift to me.
