I guess my tastes have progressed and regressed over the 5 or so years that i have really been into music. One of the bands that got me into rock n' roll was Guns N' Roses, i had a full blown obsession and seeked out bands in a similar vein. I sort of picked their influences and went backwards discovering Nazareth, Rose Tattoo, Hanoi Rocks, Dead Boys etc. The Spaghetti Incident album was a big turning point because i actively seeked out the bands they covered. I look for common threads that tie one band with another in music, rather than through genre bands. So my music tastes have have gone in all directions and have grown exponentially.

So something like this would happen:

Guns N' Roses -> Hanoi Rocks -> New York Dolls -> The Shangri-Las

Yeah, I've also just broadened my tastes. I did get into heavier music at some point after I first began listening to Def Leppard and stuff, but generally over time I've just opened up to more and more different styles, heavy and mellow. Even back when I was so into 80s rock, the first band I got into outside of rock was Run DMC, and then groups like Eric B & Rakim and early LL Cool J.

So my tastes have always been sort of extreme in comparison, but these days I can listen to Dark Tranquillity followed by Ani Difranco, and I love it. And I never grow out of a band. I see a lot of people say things like, "I liked Limp Bizkit when I was young and stupid." I pretty much think saying that is stupid. If I liked something when I was 15 years old, I still like it at 32.

I guess i could be acussed of that, when i was in my early teens i liked bands like the Offspring, Live etc. Nowadays i have no use for them because their is so much quality competition for my ears.

Saigon Kick or Live? No brainer really.

When I first attended the Cornerstone fest in 98, that really exposed me to a whole new world of music, I began to explore more extreme forms of metal and a variety of musical genres. It is the only feat I know of w/so many forms of music in one setting.

I found that the minute I turned 40 I outgrew my youthful tastes and started listening to Jazz and Blues and other adult music Like Dave Mathews. I also started smoking a pipe and driving a Ford Taurus. I read the Wall Street Journal. I no longer own even one pair of bluejeans.Razz

Seriously though, I've pretty much just added stuff. Like most of you, If I like something once I like it forever, although I do have kind of a "retired" section for CD's that I've just overplayed over the years. But it's more like a Hall of Fame than anything I've outgrown. I'm interested in learning about all sorts of new and old music; but I haven't really changed at all. I just like what I like and it tends to be loud.

10 years ago: old Metallica, Slayer & Sepultura

now: old Metallica, Slayer & Sepultura Smile

But I have, of course, built my own taste within the years, the majority is still thrash metal.

The only change that I can see for myself doesn't involve tastes but time. When I was young I honestly felt songs should only be three or four minutes tops. Anything longer would bore me. Of course there were exceptions (Maiden being the big one) but over all if I saw those long running times for songs would instinctively think "too long, won't like it, I'll get something else".

Now I'm the exact opposite. Shorter running times make me wonder where all the solos and good stuff will fit. Three or four minutes are needed to just get things fired up. Such maturation has also broadened my love of more progressive elements in metal. As well as the plain old epics.

I've also found myself much more interested in concept albums than I used to be.

What an amazing post! I'll be 34 soon and my feelings are the EXACT opposite. I used to feel ripped off if an album didn't have at least 10 songs and 60 minutes. Now I like 3:30-5:00 songs and albums that are 40-45 minutes. Not that I won't listen to longer songs/albums, but I like the short and sweet ones.

JUST today I was listening to Main Line Riders and caught myself thinking "I like the pace of this. Nice well written songs that don't drag on. This album's length is almost perfect!" There are only a few exceptional songs that don't drive me crazy when they go on and on and on and on.....

I also find myself ready for another cd once a band passes 11 or 12 songs or 55 minutes or more.

Strangly, I've been thinking of this alot lately. I'm always dwelling on numbers. I arrived to this some time back.

9-12 songs equalling 40-55 minutes. That's my idea of the right length. There are exceptions, but that's my comfort zone. 10 songs and 45 minutes is absolutely perfect.

Scott, glad to hear I'm not the only one who does the numbers thing with their music. It always disappoints me when the listings don't have running times. Not the biggest deal in purchasing but man do I ever like to know. I tend to go with the 8-9 songs at 50+ minutes these days as the preference.

Gotta side with rodentcyanide on this one. Saigon Kick can't possibly be overrated because most people have never heard of them.

And I still say Live tried to be the next REM. I like Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper but they lost me after that when they tried to get "experimental".

And as for the time thing,

I'll take 30 minutes of solid music over 50 minutes of solid music padded with filler any day.
