| Some of you may not consider this metal, but...
When I was in junior high, I listened to rap and pop and alternative, just like everyone else. I was beginning to get sick of it (cause it sucks). Then, one evening I saw the preview for Men In Black 2, for which the theme song was AC/DC's Back in Black. I was mesmorized by it! I could tell it was AC/DC (I knew a few of their songs), but didn't know the song. I searched online for a few days, going through tons of songs on a download site, until I found it. The next day, I took the bus to the mall and went to HMV, where I payed $25.99 for my first rock/metal album ever, Back in Black! (that was January 2004) I took it home and listened to it start to finish. I was blown away! My life completely changed after hearing that. For months, I listened to it every day, sometimes up to 3 or 4 times. I learned that album inside-out. I never listened to my old crappy music ever again. Actually, in June of that year (at which point I had like 10 AC/DC albums, but no others), I took all my old cds and traded them at a local cd store. With the trade credit I got, I bought Dirty Deeds, Powerage, and G'n'R's Greatest Hits (my first non-AC/DC album).
I got into pure metal in August/September 2006, when I bought Number of the Beast and Paranoid (first) and then British Steel a couple of weeks later. I got into thrash in May 2007 when I heard Ride the Lightning for the first time. |

| For me it was a few things.
In grade school in 83, a friend brought in Quiet Riot's Metal Health album to music class as it had just been released. The teacher put the cassette in the player and out of the stereo was distorted guitars and the need to bang your head! That started the interest in it. The following day, the same guy brought in Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil album. The into "In the Beginning" was pretty damn scary at the time and it sparked more interest. Shout at the Devil came on right after and that was it! I needed to have more!
Also around this same time, I was hooked on professional wrestling and mainly the tag team called The Road Warriors aka Legion of Doom! They would enter the ring to the beginning of the Black Sabbath song Iron Man. I didn't know what it was at the time until awhile later, but once I found out I became obsessed with Ozzy and Black Sabbath as well as the Quiet Riot and Motley Crue I had heard.
It just went from there into bands like Loudness, Grim Reaper, Krokus, Dio, WASP, etc and then grew into thrash/speed metal, death metal, doom metal, and everything I listen to now!

| I was 15 and my friend let me borrow Stryper's To Hell With The Devil. Up until then, I just listened to whatever was on the radio. It changed my life, that's for sure. |

You poor child. If St. Anger was my first exposure to metal, I'd be listening to hip-hop right now. Word.

| I was 5 years old, my step-uncle was about 16. He lived in an old, broken down house w/ my step-grandparent & his room was small, but he had several floor-to-ceiling KISS posters. He would lock the door, turn on a black light, play "God Of Thunder" and scare the crap out of me. |

| My dad took me to see rush when i was 9 but the first time it really clicked was when I was around 13 I went to a concrete hole in the wall venue a little over 700 square feet(very small) and the second band that played had a vocalist that randomly grabbed me, shook me uncontrollably and screamed in my face for 30 seconds. I was mortified but completely entranced by it. Ever since then I can't stop going to shows. |

| I dont know if I can pinpoint one certain moment cuz I was very young but I suppose about 1975 when I was 8 years old My sister let me spin her records if I was very careful with them. She had Kiss "Alive", Aerosmith "Get Your Wings", "Toys", and "Rocks", Montrose S/t, Ted Nugent S/T, Nazareth "Hair" and "Loud N Proud", and Rush "Fly", and "Caress" to name but a few. for the next 15 years I would search for harder and harder rock and heavy metal, then thrash and speed, then death metal. Now I'm regressing backwards to the classics again. | |

We're talking about first METAL moment here, not rock. Everyone knows that heavy metal wasn't invented until the late 80's, early 90's.

| This is a good thread for me to start posting in, I guess.
It was 1985, and I was 7 years old. I wasn't much into music at that time, except for "Thriller". My older brother Steve (older by 10 years) forced me to listen to "Killers", and I was hooked. The title track was instantly my favorite song of all time. And once I saw the album cover, I became obsessed. Obviously I was quite a dark child. I must've listened to that LP every day for a month. He then introduced me to "Number of the Beast" and "Piece of Mind", and while I enjoyed them a lot, I was still dedicated to Paul Di'Anno and it was hard for me to accept change (which I eventually did).
The funny thing about this is our seperate progression. We started out the same...Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest. I took the speed/thrash/death path, while he ended up idolizing Dokken.

| I really had two experiences during my 7th grade year (82-83). The first was in the spring of that year. I was a kid growing up in central Indiana, going to Greenwood Middle School. We had some type of convocation involving a band that put on skits. After, what I will call their variety hour in our gym, they informed us that they were going to put on a concert after school the following day. I believe there was a small charge, but I wanted to go since many of my friends were going. They ended up playing songs from Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, etc... I was sold now on metal. I wanted more access to it, so I befriended a kid named Dave, who I can only describe as a kid from the other side of the tracks. I say that not as a slam, but just due to the fact that we came from two totally different socio/economic backgrounds. And the fact that I don't think he gave two pieces of crap regarding his education. One day, I went over to Dave's house, and I discovered that he and his older brother Garlan were steeped in metal. They were my meal ticket for answers involving this wonderful genre. Later that day, his mother drove us to the mall and dropped us off. We went into what I believe was NRM (National Record Mart). Dave took me over to the Kiss section. I was a full fledged Kiss virgin, as I was with much of what was out there. I asked him what cassette I should get; he immediately pointed at "Destroyer". As we kept sifting through the cassettes, I noticed the kick ass cover which was "Creatures of the Night". I asked Dave what he thought about this album; he said it was good, but "Destroyer" was the way to go when I had the money. For some reason though, I was enamored with the coolness that was the "Creatures of the Night" album. Time passes on, I think the rest of that summer. Going into the 8th grade year, I dipped into my meager savings from my paper route and going against Dave's wishes grabbed the "Creatures of the Night" album. I knew with that cover the songs would have to be great. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed once I got through both sides. The next time I saw Dave, I went up to him and told him that I got "Creatures of the Night", but before I could say another word; he said, "You're a F*****G idiot. One would've thought I had bought stock into Texas Instruments rather than that of Apple. He was pissed, and let me know about it. All these years later, it's funny to think about, but back then, it was like he was my mother, and I had just brought home an "F". Needless to say, when we were freshmen (85-86), we had the same gym class. I told him that I finally bought "Out of the Cellar", and he gave me the same type of grief, because I should've gone with Ratt's newer album "Invasion of Your Privacy". There was no pleasing this guy. Ultimately he transferred to another school (eventually dropping out). I saw him in the early 90's, and funny enough he was in a metal band. That was the last time I ran into him. To this day, I still think that I made the correct choice with both of my decisions on what to buy first. "Creatures" is my favorite Kiss album, and "Out of the Cellar" is my favorite Ratt album. Sorry Dave, if you're out there. | |

| I have stated somewhere before that I was given records of Rush, Vanhalen, Sabbath, and Alice Cooper as a youngin' (age 7 or so) by my Uncle. However, I would say my first "metal moment" came at age 11 in 1985 at a talent show. My friends and I lip synched and did air guitar to Maiden's The Trooper. The most metal part of this is that it was a Catholic school and this was the height of the PMRC and the "all metal is evil campaign." Peace. | |
