Is it possible to not like Black Sabbath and be a metal fan?

I've heard from several people that are not too excited about Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, etc. Some even plain state that they don't like these bands. Fewer have the same reaction to old Metallica but there are still some heavy metal fans that don't care about it either.

Nonetheless, I have never seen a heavy metal fan doesn't like the classic Ozzy era Sabbath, even if you don't like Ozzy, the songs from that time defined heavy metal as we know it. Do you know of any heavy metal fans that just have never liked songs like Iron Man, War Pigs, Symptom of the Universe, etc?

I know a metal fan that loves Dio era Sabbath, but not much else.

I've also had tons of people argue with me that bands like Black
Sabbath and Judas Priest, "are not heavy metal, they are just hard
rock." This always just makes me laugh. You'd have a better argument
that many of the modern bands aren't heavy metal, since Judas Priest
and Black Sabbath were the originators of heavy metal.

Yes,yes and Yes.Different people like different things.I myself am not a big Sabbath fan.Well not with Ozzy anyway.Now Dio -era sabbath is totally different.I just never cared for Ozzys voice.I dont think it changes anyones metal credibility whatsoever.

Yes. I've just never liked Ozzys vocals. Like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Yep its possible not to like Black Sabbath and still be a metal fan. However, you have to acknowledge their influence.

Of course. Paradoxically Ozzy era Sabbath is my favorite band ever, but for some reason I don't like solo Ozzy. I guess that makes me an Iommi fan. There's no reason anybody has to like anything. Even me for example, I got kind of sick of the Paranoid album years ago, just from over saturation.

you can like or not like any band you want & still call yourself a metal fan so long as you still enjoy metal. it doesn't matter if Sabbath invented metal or not.

I like 'em both. Matter of fact, I like it all. "Born Again" and "Seventh Star" rank high in my Sabbath favorites as well.

I like all era's of Sabbath, some were just better LP's then others.

If my "granpa" touched puppies in funny ways, I sure wouldn't like him. Same goes for Black Sabbath.

I like Sabbath but you couldn't call me a huge fan, more like casual. I only know the hits of both eras and although I plan on getting some of the classics they are not high on my priority list (sorry but I'm being honest here). No denying the inflence and talent found throughout Sabbath, I'm just not a real big fan. That being said, after I familiarize myself with some songs not overplayed (i.e the non-hits) my opinion will probably change. After I heard Live At Radio City Music Hall I now realize how great a guitarist Iommi is so the same can be expected after I hear some of the classic non-hit material.

I like the Ozzy, Dio and Toni Martin stuff. And also I like Born Again and Seventh Star. That is my opinion and taste, but of course someone else can have a different taste and don't like what I like. I can't see a problem in that and I don't know why every metal fan must be a fan of Black Sabbath.

Some time ago i got angry with my best friend because he told me that LEADER BOYZ WITH ELECTRIC TOYZ by PRETTY BOY FLOYD is much better then all the BLACK SABBATH albums together. I could not believe it because he is a very big heavy metal fan but he was not joking.

if he had said that Pretty Boy Floyd was more metal than Sabbath, i could understand getting angry. however him simply having the opinion that they are "better" is nothing to get pissed about. it's personal opinion.

The reason i got angry was because its crazy to say something like that. I love PRETTY BOY FLOYD lp too but you can not compare one album with a history of 30 years releasing great albums. Thats why i could not understand his opinion.

I can understand how a metal fan can like heavy metal yet not like a band like Black Sabbath.

I often get emails from people who are upset with me for not have The Beatles on my site. Many claim that I cannot be a rock and metal fan if I don't like the Beatles. The thing is, I know a lot about the Beatles, I respect them for their musical importance, I even took a music appreciation class that was all about the Beatles once. I acknowledge their importance in the history of rock and roll. However, I just have no desire to collect their CDs and am not really a big fan of their music. As a matter of fact, in my next update there will be a new addition to the Hall of Shame where some guy calls me "an ignorant schmuck" for not having The Beatles and Smashing Pumpkins on my site.

It is very possible to be a fan of a genre of music without liking certain bands that most people hold as "the best" of that genre, or in the case of Sabbath "one of the originators" of the style.

However, it does irritate me to hear all the history revisionism going on now where people say that bands like Priest, Saxon, Maiden, UFO, Sabbath, etc are "not heavy metal." To me that is ignorance. It would be like saying The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were not rock n roll bands. These are the bands that defined the genre long before the Slayers and Metallicas of the world.
