| I gotta go with Kirk. But mainly for his playing on the first three Metallica albums.
Overall I like Dave better as a guitarist. But Kirk’s solos on the first three albums are excellent! I heard Dave’s versions on No Life til Leather, and while he was good… the playing was stiff and focused mostly on speed. Kirk took what he did and injected a lot of Michael Schenker fluidity. Kirk had very clean chops back then. He was fresh from taking lessons with Joe Satriani.
With that said…
Dave is a lot better than Kirk at rhythm playing. | |

| I agree that Kirk has relied too much on the wah pedal since the black album… but let’s not pretend that Dave doesn’t give the lion’s share of the fancy solos to whoever his current lead player is at the moment.
When is the last time Dave has played a great memorable solo? I can’t think of one since Rust in Peace. | |
