As far as Trump goes, he was an anomaly. In my lifetime, all Presidents have been "selected" and not "elected".
He spoke out against globalization & regime change wars as a Republican. WOW! That was a Democrat thing not so far back in time.
I liked that about him. Trust me, he did stuff that I thought were WTF moments. That is a part of life. No big deal.
