| It's 31st December 1989... ...and you need to make a top ten list of the greatest albums of ALL TIME. ANY ALBUM released prior to the 12/31/1989 cutting point counts. This is a logical continuation of these two threads: So it's 31st December 1979So it's 31st December 1984By coincidence it's actually been 5 years since that last thread I've been lazy! So the best albums released before the 90's. Feel free to re-do those old lists too, if that's what you feel like doing. | |

| 1. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (1980) 2. Dio - Holy Diver (1983) 3. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith (1984) 4. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime (1988) 5. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King (1987) 6. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys II (1988) 7. Judas Priest - Stained Class (1978) 8. Iron Maiden - Powerslave (1984) 9. Van Halen - VH1 (1978) 10. Rainbow - Long Live Rock'n'Roll (1978)
Three new additions from 1985-1989 take spots 4-6. I've still got three 70's albums left on the list and four albums left from 1980-1984.
So those would be my picks if I walked into a record store on New Year's Eve 1989. The greatest heavy metal albums ever, dated 12/31/1989.

I like the Cult, I love the Warning, cool 80's stuff there though I'm not the biggest Crue or RATT fan. EDIT: Nothing from the 70's though?

| My list 5 years later would probably look something like this now as I would have a larger collection and been exposed to more bands. I also tried to imagine what my 15 year old self would be bringing to the party on NYE.
Not in any particular order:
Whitesnake - 1987 Judas Priest - Ram It Down Dio - Holy Diver Ozzy - Bark at the Moon Metallica - Ride the Lightning Savatage - hall of the Mountain King Anthrax - Among the Living Maiden - Piece of Mind Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise Accept - Metal Heart
A lot had to be left off like WASP, Dokken, Motorhead, Megadeth, etc.

| It's a strange thing to think, and I honestly have thought about it, nut one could stop at 1990, and there is enough to listen to from there on back to the late 1960's. I am not slagging the last 30 years in any way, but rather marveling at how much there is to listen to from '60 to '90. Just in the 1980's alone there is so much we have yet to discover. We are so lucky to have 50 years plus of Rock and Metal to enjoy. | |

If you, Senti, could put these thoughts into one line? It would be the HOM f'ing Motto. Great recruitment tool for Gilberts offspring, Hadley's infants, That guy in Texas whom has those beautiful daughters, what's his name? I think he just joined 17 years ago. That's right, I think his surname is Scott something. His girlies might jump on board. Required Fields may find a seal colony that may be interested. That Lari guy? Are we sure we want any of his spawn involved here??? Sure. WTF not? I really wish he would talk about one of the most kickass labels of all time, POKO!!!! And then there is these guys....Mike in Fla....well, he made his choice. I guess Savatage is ok. But Nasty Savage is better. Then there is TZ. He speaks his mind. Good for the board, bad for him calling me out on my bs. Let's go to Glower. All I can say about this dude is: He Knows his Goals. He Avoids Clichés. He Avoids Sentimentality. He does not Use Images. His Use Metaphor and Simile blows you away with every post. He Uses Concrete Words Instead of Abstract Words. He, indeed, Communicates Themes. He Subverts the Ordinary. And I f'ing love him for being so outstanding on this board. You weird homey! Keep on!!! I know I am missing many friends. Shout yourself out so I can say something...Nice? about you? Or Real? Or, slam you because you think Amy Lee is Metal? Cereal. I will scour for a minute, then go to bed.

| I'm surprised no-one has a single album from the 70's on their top ten list. I had three, and uncle Sax had the Clash which I think was released in '79 in Europe. But beyond that, none made the lists.
So either I failed to explain the concept or the 80's just destroyed even the best albums of the 70's. I think Van Halen's debut slays Fair Warning, but maybe it's just me. Aerosmith, Priest, Sabbath, Rainbow, also had classic albums in the 70's.

| I listened to Rocks, Toys in the Attic, and Get Your Wings today in my car. It was okay. But no way is it 80’s Metal. 1980s cranked it up and got wild as hell. | |

| Fair enough. I like the glam/pop and the thrash metal stuff, but I guess at heart I am more of a classic metal kind of guy.
I think the 90's was more impactful for me, because of the power metal stuff. I find it the spiritual successor of Rainbow and Deep Purple and Led Zep, all that 70's goodness.

In no way shape or form does it represent what my favorite albums are now. I can't even listen to those Metallica albums without getting angry lol

| 1989. My senior year of high school. These would have been my Top 10 cassettes to have in my locker and in my Walkman, in no particular order.
Toys in the Attic - Aerosmith State of Euphoria - Anthrax Get Your Wings - Aerosmith So Far, So Good, So What - Megadeth Long Cold Winter - Cinderella Zoso - Led Zeppelin Appetite for Destruction - GnR Among the Living - Anthrax Peace Sells - Megadeth ...And Justice for All - Metallica _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. We would’ve been best friends in high school! Yep. Pretty much every band on that list was a recommendation from high school buddies. I've mentioned before, since I had no older siblings to guide me in the ways of cool music, I relied on the guys I hung with to say "Hey man, check these guys out". And I don't know if it was a Philly thing, but we had no problem playing something from Cinderella and following it up with an Anthrax song. Hair bands and thrash bands meshed pretty well in the crowd I hung with. There was no big separation between the styles. It was all "metal" to us. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was.
