Subject: Queen, Crue...Which band would you like to see a biopic on next? Fri Apr 26, 2019 7:49 pm
Aside from all of the factors that make or break a band biopic, which group do you think has a story most worth putting to screen?
My vote would be for Zeppelin. They are one of my favorite bands for sure, but unlike a band like KISS, their story is not as contested with some members wanting to write other members out of their history. It would be fascinating to see a cinematic portrayal of the birth of the band out of the Yardbirds connection. And all four members had/have really unique personalities that would make for excellent characters on screen. Moreover, there was certainly enough drama in their tenure to make for a good storyline.
How about others?

Stevie Ray Vaughan. I actually started writing a script for it back in '98. Not saying the script was any good but his story was such an inspiration to me.

I would love to see one based on AC/DC. It's the band that basically started me on my metal journey, and they are pretty secretive with their lives, so I'd like to see a movie about them.

Good call on Zeppelin.
How about Def Leppard? I think the whole "drummer loses his arm but continues on with the band" would make for an interesting drama.
Or how about one sort of out of leftfield...Boston. Debut album blows everyone's socks off and is still a classic, band never again rises to that level, spends 8 years in oblivion after sophomore album more or less flops, lead singer commits suicide...sounds like a movie to me.

Here you go!
I was surprised to find the full thing on youtube! I remember watching this on VH1 in the early 2000s. Joe Elliot recently slammed it, but that's only because he wants DL to be elevated to the likes of giants like Queen. It's actually an awesome movie.

SRV and Boston are ones I never would have thought of! Good calls! AC/DC would also be amazing, especially seeing the transition from Bon to Brian.

Yeah an AC/DC biopic would really be great. Not to mention having a killer soundtrack.

My first thought was Zep just b/c they are Led Zeppelin. Lots of great stories
Second thought was the mighty Van Halen. Also, lots of great stories.
Dio would be great as well. (Rainbow, Sabbath, solo, H&H)
Agreed on Kiss. The infighting among band members of the past and present would have it in development hell forever. The Kiss Army would be like the Lucas fan boys whining about the omission or inclusion of the most minute details to show how true they are.
Toho, great idea about Boston. There is a lot of meat on that bone. You know it would garner a huge regional following.
I would like a Ramones movie. There is lots to tell there.
Another option is Metallica (the rise and fall, sellout, Napster angle, drug/alcohol abuse) and a tie in (sequel?) could be about Megadeth and Mustaine.
I think the same group that did the Queen movie is helming the Elton John movie that's coming out this Summer.
I wonder if the music pics take off, does it become like the super hero movies where they are making one for everyone? Other general music movies could be about the L.A. scene in the '80's; NWOBHM. If done right, like Bohemian Rhapsody, it appeals to a wide audience and not just the "superfans" of the band or artist.

Seconding the AC/DC and Ramones picks.
Aerosmith''s story would make a good flick too.
Hollywood, are you listening?

Yeah they were my second choice as well. I think their story would be very entertaining and a fun watch.
Dio would be another great choice. He's been on so many iconic albums, I don't feel he gets the credit he deserves.

Good call with Dio; just navigating his various stints in bands would be interesting enough.

Umm...Lemmy? Anyone? I know there is the cool documentary, but a scripted biopic would be killer. I have read two autos on him and they were funny, heartbreaking, and entertaining.
Can't believe I forgot Phil Lynott. D'oh!

I thought of Lemmy as well, then figured the documentary was better than a movie could be, but would still love to see it.
I'd like to see one about Ozzy too, but not until after Sharon dies. Would like a little bit of truth in it lol

Yeah I agree, Dio would be a great choice! Going from Ronnie and the Rumblers to Elf to Rainbow to Sabbath to solo to H&H, heck it would have to be a mini series.

I’d like to see a Sabbath bio movie. They had such a long career with plenty of interesting twists and turns. From the early satanism accusations to the drugs and switching singers etc...

Quite obviously to be the big Hollywood film the artist would have to be very popular and in turn have led a tumultuous life style.
I'd prefer 1 off documentaries that are popping up (Death, Anvil and even going old school with the Decline films to name a few) over the over commercialized fodder, not saying I don't like them to a degree and have watched them all.
As for wish list artists that should get the treatment, for me I'd like to see one for Pantera. It would put Motley's Dirt to shame and would appeal to the masses and look good for the Hollywood story tellers.
Another would be could be The New York Dolls, I am certain a tale or 2 can be found therein.
If I was a betting man I'd say with the Queen and now Elton John that probably Bowie might be on the horizon or even Tom Petty?

I would love to see a biopic on Bon Scott, but doubt the AC/DC guys would let them use their music or would Bon's estate be cool with any movie, but I am sure we shall see one, one of these years
There was talk of a Phil Lynott film for over a decade but so far that is all it has been, with the success of 'Bohemianism Rhapsody' I am sure that project will be revived as well as Janis Joplin biopic that has been development hell for close to 20 years
I would love to see a film on Aerosmith and we probably will because I am sure Steven Tyler would sell his mother to see a film made about he and his band's life on the silver screen

As much as I’d love to see that it has to be done right. Phil alone had quite a story since his childhood.

That didn't stop them from making that terrible Jimi Hendrix movie starring Andre 3000 a few years ago where they couldn't get the rights to any of his music and reportedly just made shit up. Can you imagine a film about a legendary musician and you can't use any of their music? Preposterous.
