| Just curious what y'all do to earn a living around here. Myself, I'm a truck driver. I don't go over the road, just do local LTL delivery and pick up. Been at it for about four years now. Not a bad job, definitely a little rough on the body, but it pays well enough.
So what do you guys do? | |

That's cool, I used to work for a tradeshow company that had its own graphics department. I worked in that department part time and was learning all the different machines. Had a lot of fun working there.

| I've been in IT for the past 35 years. Started doing data entry then moved into development. Five years ago I moved into troubleshooting (aka Production Support). I don't actually deal with the disgruntled enduser who's having a problem, Field Support handles that. But then if it's not something they know how to deal with they put it in our queue and it's up to my team to figure out what's going on, if there's a way to fix it and create an issue for the development teams to fix a defect if necessary. Figuring out stuff has always been something I've had a knack for and 5 years ago my manager at the time suggested I apply for this position despite the fact that I was more or less happy in development. It was wise advice because this job is right in my wheelhouse; look at a problem, figure out why it's happening, determine if there's an immediate way to fix it then assign the root cause to the responsible party. It's like detective work; you have clues of what's going on and you have the end result, now figure out how we got here and who's to blame. Nobody loves their job all the time but most of the time I'm pretty content in this one. | That sounds like me. I've been wondering what I'm going to do in a few years when I retire and animal causes have a strong pull for me. I've been asking people at my vet what kind of education it takes to work there and it seems I'm already qualified for anything less than "vet tech" and it wouldn't take me too long to even get to that level. I love animals and they seem to love me. Even the receptionists at my vet have commented about how many peoples' pets just seem to gravitate to me. It's like I've always said: "I love animals; it's people I can't stand." _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

There's something to be said for working for large companies, isn't there? After working for various companies for years, in 1995 I took a job with my current employer (the largest car rental company around) and things have been good ever since. But I remember those days of working for a company that might close any day and it SUCKED!!!! Never knowing if one day you showed up for work and found the doors closed. That's one thing I don't have to worry about these days. I actually took a pay cut back then to come here but I could see the writing on the wall where I was working in CT at the time an knew it was only a matter of time until the place closed. Sure enough about 2 years later I received a letter from the HR department of the company in CT that they were out of business. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Sure enough about 2 years later I received a letter from the HR department of the company in CT that they were out of business. I've been involved with one medium company that was bought out by the Dial corporation. I must say, it was better working for the company before Dial came in. I was also working for a small family owned jewelry store that was actually supposed to be mine eventually. It was owned by my uncle, and he had it and a few other store throughout the years that closed down. Is main store was there from 1981 until 2015 when he closed it. I was going to buy it off him, but by the time I felt like I knew enough to run it by myself, he had run it into the ground and just gave up. I ended up working there for a few more years even after I knew it was a dead end job. It paid well and I was in a comfort zone I was scared to leave. Once he told me he was closing shop, I went and got my CDL. I now work for a very large trucking company, USF Reddaway, owned by YRC Worldwide. They are huge, but treat their employees like shit. I like the comfort of knowing I pretty much have a job for as long as I want one, but would trade this environment for a small friendly easy going environment where I at least feel appreciated any day. Dial was pretty much the same way. You were a number and nothing more.

| I work for the federal government doing construction project management. Prior to and for my entire life I have been in the construction industry. So far 35 plus years.
Yep I was lazy and fell into a menial job but excelled in the management side of it.
As for the big or small debate, after working for the federal government I would NEVER go back to the civilian sector. EVER. Being a part of something so huge and fulfilling is right for me. One regret is I wish I would have thought to go into this 20 years ago instead of six as I would be in a waaay better position with regards to retiring.
