The Human Centipede (First Sequence)(2009)-two girls are traveling through Europe when they encounter some car problems. Looking for help, they discover a house that is the home of a middle age man. The girls are soon drugged and are held captive in his home. It turns out the man is a mad doctor who plans to turn the girls and another man he has kidnapped into a creature he calls the Human Centipede. This movie seemed to have something of a buzz about it when it first came several years ago. The movie is grim and pretty original, but really wasn't as gory as I was expecting. In fact, I felt that the film could have pushed that envelope further than it did and the version I saw was the unrated cut as well. I give it 2 out of 5.

Don't worry too much; look forward to getting your fill with the sequel. It's a gore fest.
I never bothered with the third one because all the reviews I read about it said it was really bad.
Same here, and the previews make it look like the most overwrought thing ever. I mean, it's been right here on Netflix for me to watch anytime, but my gut keeps telling me "no, it's a stinker."

Creepshow
A new horror anthology series from Shudder based on the movies of the same name, down to the comic book framing and ads. First up, Gray Matter, based on a short story by Stephen King, and The House Of The Head, about a little girl dealing with a haunted doll house. Good stuff so far.

Hey yeah I just saw the ad for that, mildly interested. I'm a sucker for anthology shows (although I admit I'm not the biggest fan of the original Creepshow. Still...). I might check this out.

Boat (2017)
A monstrous boar, about the size of a rhino, terrorizes the Australian outback in this sort of remake of the earlier, and better, Razorback. Stars one time WWE wrestler Nathan Jones.

"Hellboy" (2019)
The demonic monster-fightin' super hero travels to England, where a freshly resurrected witch from the days of King Arthur has plans to bring about the end of the world. In other words, it's just another day at the office for the Big Red Guy.
I wasn't expecting much from Neil "The Descent" Marshall's reboot attempt after its epic crash and burn at the box office earlier this year, but it's actually a pretty fun watch, loaded with hordes of toothy creatures, ultra-violence and splashy gore.
The new guy in the Hellboy suit (David Harbour of "Stranger Things") is clearly having a blast, but he's no Ron Perlman, and obviously the whole thing absolutely pales in comparison to Guillermo del Toro's still-awesome pair of early-'00s "Hellboy" flicks. So, not a total disappointment but not a must-see, either.

^^Interesting 'cause my entries for tonight are kiiiiinda related. BTW, is that movie as bad as reported?
So sorta weird but I've been enjoying that TubiTV app per Fat Freddy's recommendation (thanks dude!). Oliver Stone's Platoon popped up as I was browsing and something randomly told me to throw it on. I'm a sucker for a good Nam War Movie and I hadn't seen it since the VHS glory days (after I first saw Apocalypse Now around that time I made it a point to track down every Nam movie ever made). I was pretty stunned as to how well it's held up. I decided to carry on with the lesser-known Hamburger Hill, released the same year. Again I was blown away by its relevance. Both movies really are decent observation pieces despite whisps of flaws (Platoon gets a little preachy, Hill has some rather banal dialogue disguised as GI slang).
What was neat was revisiting these films again that had evoked so many strong emotions in my youth, only to find my perspective slightly shifted and colored differently due to how much I've learned about the conflict thanks to the internet age. Overall it was a pretty amazing experience.

"Monty Python: Almost the Truth! (The Lawyer's Cut)"
Thanks to Netflix, I'm revisiting this insanely in-depth (6 hours!), very entertaining documentary from 2009 that covers 40 years of Python history, loaded with vintage clips and interviews with the five surviving Pythons and lots of their famous friends and associates. An absolute treasure trove of trivia for MP fans!

My friend and I have been watching the Puppet Master series and intend to finish it - we're about to watch the fifth - hope it picks up, 'cause Puppet Master 4 has been the worst so far by a significant margin - it's all b-movie fun, but the last one was just straight up bad/boring.

"Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies" (1993)
Todd Philips, later of "The Hangover" and the upcoming "Joker" fame, directed this disturbing low budget doc about the late GG Allin, the death obsessed, feces flingin', brutally violent punk rocker. After spending an hour-plus watching this looney tune abuse himself and his audience, you'll feel like you need a shower. Seriously, it's just... ugh. (shudder)

The Gate (1987)
A large tree removed from the backyard of a kid's home reveals a deep hole and soon strange things begin happening. The kid's friend, with the help of his heavy metal music collection, reduces that they have uncovered the gate to hell and they must discover a way to keep it from opening. This is another one I've heard of but had never seen. I think it was much better than expected.

"Hype!" (1996)
A fun documentary that examines the Seattle music scene of the 90s, zooming in on some of the lesser known local bands that were left behind after the Nirvana/AIC/ Soundgarden-fueled major label feeding frenzy subsided. As far as most of those bands are concerned, the grunge craze was the worst thing that could've happened to their city's music scene, because after the mainstream invaded Seattle, finished sucking it dry, and moved on, things were never the same.

The Collector(2009)-a man disparate to pay off loan sharks his wife owes money to, decides to steal a jewel hidden in a safe in his employers home. Once he has broken in, he discovers that a killer has beaten him to the punch and is torturing his boss and wife. He also finds out that the killer has rigged the house with multiple boobytraps designed to try to stop anyone from escaping. The man now has to find away to get out of the house or become another victim. This movie in some ways almost plays like across between a torture porn and a horror version of the Home Alone films. I found this one to be a decent watch, but I've kind have grown tried of the whole torture porn style at this point. Worth one watch at least. I give it 2 out of 5.

This seems to be my week for weird music documentaries... first it was GG Allin, and now...
"A Family Underground" (2008)
A document of the 2008 Gathering of the Juggalos festival, seen mostly through the eyes of a couple who made the trek all the way from England (!) to witness four life-changing days of music (by Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, Ice-T, Afroman, Three 6 Mafia, and many more), toxic substances, backyard wrestling, and general debauchery.
Non-Juggalos (such as myself) will either find this flick unintentionally hilarious, or depressing, depending on your patience for listening to the philosophical ramblings of unwashed weirdos in bad clown makeup and ugly girls showing their boobs. (Side note: I caught a glimpse of a guy wearing a Bathory t-shirt in the crowd at one point, and wondered if he got off at the wrong bus stop, haha.)
I still don't "get" the ICP/Juggalo thing at all, but I can't deny that the Gathering looks like it's a hell of a party. To quote Ice-T, "this is some cult sh*t." Sooooo, umm... yea, whoop whoop muthafuggas, or whatever.

Time to start gettin' into the Halloween mood...
"Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers" (1988)
After sitting out the last "Halloween" installment, Michael Myers escapes from the asylum and makes his long awaited return to Haddonfield, where he attempts to rub out his young niece. Of course, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) isn't about to let that happen. "H4" has always been a sentimental favorite for me since it was the first "Halloween" I was old enough to see in a theater. It's a pretty standard 80s slasher flick, but there are a few nice nods to Carpenter's original and Lord knows it's better than any of the shit-show sequels that came after it.

The Duties (2019)
A girl is abducted off the streets and awakens in a "coffin" in the middle of nowhere. She soon discovers she is a participant in game where she ,and other girls, are being stalked by masked armed killers. That's about it for this one but it is a very good movie with some effective gore, mostly done by practical effects.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
My wife had never seen this but I did a long tim ago and was not too impressed by it. I thought I'd give it another watch and see if my opinion changed. It hasn't. A surprisingly bloodless affair whose reputation far exceeds the actual product.

Oh man, I love the original TCM. The fact that you THINK you see more gore than you actually do is part of the genius of the movie.
I think it also helps to see that movie with a crowd of people who've all seen it a million times - sort of like the Rocky Horror phenomenon (which admittedly I've never understood - I just think that movie sucks).
I saw TCM at James Madison University on Halloween night my sophomore year in college and it was GREAT!. The audience knew all the lines and even recited the opening captions (read by none other than John Laroquette later of Night Court fame). People were dressed as Leatherface, carrying cardboard chainsaws, etc. It was the most fun I've ever had at a movie theater.
