Watched the Pirates lose a pitcher's duel 1-0. Of all players, Mets pitcher Wheeler knocked on the only run of the day.

Lots of trade activity today. The Cardinals got in on it early rather surprisingly trading Tommy Pham to Tampa for 3 mediocre minor leaguers.
Pham was a 20/20 man last year and finished 11th in NL MVP voting but he's having a down year this season and I guess STL figures they have better outfielders down in Memphis and one already on the roster in Harrison Bader. But I'll miss Pham. He's intense and all business on the field but he's been a class act off it and generous with his time to various charities. Pham's father has been in jail for most of Tommy's life and he wants to set a good role model for young kids out there. You gotta admire someone like that.

Dodgers got in on the trade action too. Landing Brian Dozier from the Twins for Logan Forsythe and a couple minor leaguers.
Watching the Phillies and Red Sox.

There were a TON of trades today. I don't remember a season with so many last minute deals.
007's Pirates made a big one and it depends upon who you ask if it was a good one. Pittsburgh got Chris Archer from Tampa for Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows. I think we'll have to wait a few years to determine who got the better of that deal; I can see it either way.

I'm a bit bummed that they traded Meadows. I can't help but feel he's going to be great. Time will tell. Glasnow is a decent enough pitcher but no great shakes. He's one of those players that dominates AS A but can't quite cut in the Majors. At any rate, I watched the Pirates beat the Cubs 5-4.

Watched the Cardinals take 3 out of 4 from the Rockies today and hang a loss on Wade Davis in the process. Miles Mikolas pitched his usual solid game going 7 innings allowing 1 ER but STL trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th. Lo and behold, for once the Cardinals rallied and against one of the better closers in the game. Single by Greg Garcia, single by Harrison Bader who then stole second, double by Jose Martinez. 3-2 STL final.
I'll say one thing, since firing Matheny as manager the team defense hasn't improved but the baserunning and overall enthusiasm seems to have.

Watching Yankees vs Red Sox.
The Bosox were down 4-1 after 2 but they just scored 8 in the 4th and now lead 10-4. Hopefully the Yankees come back with 5 or 6 of their own. I don't like either of these teams and I want them to mutually destroy each other.

Cardinals at Pirates. I gotta say Archer is looking a little shaky so far. Not bad but with all the hype about him, I expected much mote.

Yeah this game isn't going like I thought it would at all. STL started a guy who by all rights should be in AAA against the heralded Archer and it's currently 6-5 Pirates in the 6th. Sure a couple of runs are unearned but Archer wasn't fooling anyone.
Geez, we've left 12 men on in 6 innings. Typical.
EDIT: Finally tied up at 6 but good grief 15 runners left on base!

Holy crap, talk about moving guys around!
Fowler apparently got hurt running the bases in the top of the 8th so what do the Cardinals do?
They move Molina from catcher to first, Carpenter from first to third, Gyorko from third to second, Munoz from second to right and Pena is the new catcher. All that because one guy got hurt. LaRussa would be proud.

So the Cardinal pen blows yet another game. But to be fair, when you leave 15 guys on base you don't deserve to win anyway.

I'm watching the Yankees/Red Sox before the Cardinals game starts.
I hate both these teams but I must admit it's fun seeing the Yankees get a run off of Craig Kimbrel in the 9th. I can't stand Kimbrel with his stupid "crab pose" before his windup.
And as I was typing that the Yankees have now brought the tying run to the plate off of "crab boy".

Eh, the Pirates are facing yet another starting pitcher who by all rights should be at AAA so might was well play around with some potential moves you might consider in a meaningful game.
Besides having a bunch of guys underperform this year, the Cardinals have also lost most of their starting rotation to injuries. Gomber is taking Carlos Martinez' spot tonight as Martinez is on the DL for the third time this year, joining Wacha and Wainwright. The only consistent starter the Cardinals have had all year is Miles Mikolas; who saw THAT coming?

Damn. The Yankees left Crab Boy off the hook. Glayber Torrez flied out with the bases loaded in the 9th. 4-1 Evil Empire 2 over Evil Empire 1.

First inning of the Cardinals/Pirates game and we have an injury already????
Jose Martinez batting for rookie OF Tyler Oneill and no one knows why. And already STL is in danger of leaving two runners on in the first inning.

I actually like the Braves now.
I hated them for years after TBS forced them down our throats as "America's Team" and they won the damn division all the time only to suck once post-season began. But I'm mostly over it. I still hope the Phillies take the NL East but I'm OK with the Braves too.
Except for that stupid "indian" chant and "the chop" the Atlanta fans do; I STILL hate that.

Yeah, that inning was pretty bad. I fully expected the Cardinals to leave the bases loaded again.
But look at this guy we're starting; it's his second major league start. He really should be pitching out of the pen at this level if anything.
I have to say though, this young Cardinal team seems to be playing with a little fire after Matheny was let go. It's like they realize the new manager (who used to manage most of these guys in the minors) knows who they are and what they're capable of.
EDIT: Wow. The Pirates are throwing the ball around like the Cardinals usually do.

Holy crap! Cardinal rookie Dakota Hudson pitched 3 scoreless innings and only threw 28 pitches???
That's like this

OK, the Cards won tonight 8-4 but they left 12 more men on base. That's 28 in two games!
This has been going on for the last several years. If the Cardinals hope to compete for the NL Central title they need to clean that s*** up. I don't care who comprises the lineup, you can't keep leaving double-digit men on base game after game.

I had to doublecheck the box score; Dakota Hudson threw 28 pitches and recorded 9 outs. That boggles my mind. It's not uncommon to see pitchers throw that many pitches in a single inning.
I think the nucleus of a competing team is here in STL but they need to cut bait on some of the dead wood on the roster. But I think the pitching overall looks really strong. Now they need to add some offense.
I also can't believe Matt Carpenter is tied for the NL lead in homers with 28. He basically was AWOL for the first 6 weeks of the season and now he's tied for the league lead in HRs. So stop trying to bat him anywhere else but leadoff; don't try to explain it, don't try to "fix" it, just let the guy mash out of the leadoff position. Dammit.
