| Aledmys Diaz was given time off to visit the Fernandez' family; they grew up 3 doors apart in Cuba. He returned to the lineup tonight and just belted his first ML grand slam. Very similar to the Gordon homerun last night; lost of pointing to the sky and hugs in the dugout. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

For me it's all about Maddon. I hate the guy. I always thought he was sort of a jerk but now that he's more "local" and I can hear about all his exploits, the guy is just a plain dick. Everything his team does is above board, let another team do the exact same thing and it's "dirty" and he'll get revenge. My best revenge would be watching Maddon piss and moan as his team gets bounced somewhere along the line in post-season and the century-long championship drought continues. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| The Pirates ended up losing the game 6-4 and ,with the Giants win, have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. It's just as well, if they had somehow snuck in, they would have been one and done. Such a lost season. Between front office blunders (chief among them not re-signing Happ) and slumping players (looking at you McCutchen), there was really no chance for any type of success. Maybe they can at least salvage a winning record. Onto next year and hopefully much better results (but I really doubt it with that front office). | |

| I don't know if you can blame the Pirates' front office for not re-signing Happ. Sure he was great for them last year but in very limited sample size. And nothing in his history suggested he'd do anything like he did this year.
McCutchen mystifies me. His run production is OK this year but what the heck happened to the average? And he's not even 30 yet so it shouldn't be age catching up with him. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Well, maybe so about Happ but considering what they did end up getting (Vogelsong at the complete tail end of his career and a stupid trade with the Mets acquiring Niese AND subsequently trading him back to them) just were bad decisions. Of course, they weren't expecting Liriano to end up tail spinning out of control either. Oh well, like I said, hopefully they can right the ship next year.

| Watching the Pirates take on the Cubs. Once again the Pirates knock around Arrieta (gotta love that) scoring at least 6 runs off him for the third straight straight start. Of course the Pirates bullpen has to be shaky and let the Cubs back into the game. Current score is 8-4 Pirates in the bottom of the 7th.
Edit: And as I was typing that John Jaso hits for the cycle. Where was all this offense a week ago ? | |

| I love that the Pirates are clobbering Arrieta. The Cardinals usually do to (although not the last time). I think that guy is soooooo overrated. Cubs fans want to put him in Kershaw's class. | Watched what little there was of the Pirates Cubs game. It was tied 1-1 going into the 6th inning but was delayed because of rain. Since the Pirates have nothing to gain and the Cubs really have nothing to lose, MLB decided to call the game and will not make it up. | |

| Watched the Cardinals get a gift win last night.
Of course they first tried to give it away in the top of the 9th. But with the score tied in the bottom of the 9th and Carpenter at first, Molina hit what should have been a ground rule double but the umps missed it and Carpenter scored. The umps stood around for a few seconds then left the field. About 20 seconds after the umps walked down the tunnel, the Reds manager went looking for them because he wanted to challenge the call.
Turns out there's a rule in MLB that if a team wants to have the final play of a game reviewed, they have 10 seconds to tell the umpires. That didn't happen so the play stood. But who knew about that rule???? Seems kind of arbitrary. I get that we don't want teams sitting around reviewing tape after the game ends for an hour and then deciding they want a review but 10 seconds seems really quick. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I watched the Cardinals shutout the Pirates 7-0 last night. Matt Holliday was activated for the game so he and the fans could say goodbye to each other because the Cards have told Holliday it is very unlikely that they will pick up his option next year. Holliday pinch-hit in the 7th and blasted his 20th homerun.
Unfortunately the Giants also won so STL is still one game back for the last wild card. And Wacha is starting today so Kershaw better be on for the Dodgers because today we will really need the Giants to lose since the Cardinals probably will. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Kang just kills the Cardinals.
I don't know what Matheny is thinking starting Wacha this game. His last outing was 2 IP and 9 ER. So how does Wacha start this game? Three run shot to Kang. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Maybe so but the Pirates have a very weak bottom of the line up today. I guess Cervelli's sore hand will keep him out the remainder of the season (the whole 1 game!) | |

| Well that was bad. That's what they get trotting out that lineup. Rivero (another godwaful trade by the team)gives up a horrible home run to Gyorko. Guess I'll be pulling for the Cards from here on out. A team that run the right way. | |

Depends on which Wainwright shows up. He's had some really awful starts this year. And in the pregame show today he was talking about probably having butterflies if tomorrow's game means something which it will since the Cards won today. Gyorko has been a real surprise. 30 homers from a guy who was just supposed to provide some pop off the bench. I actually think his performance this year may mean someone like Matt Adams gets traded in the off season. They can keep Carpenter at first and play Gyorko at third. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| So I see the Dodgers rolled over and played dead for the Giants today. They only got 3 hits off some pitcher I never heard of while Kershaw started for LA.
So that means the Cardinals MUST win tomorrow to even have a chance at post-season. Unfortunately STL is now 9 games over .500 for the 10th time this season. They've lost all 9 of their previous attempts to go 10 games over .500 so I'm not holding my breath.
Dammit, this was the game I was sure the Giants would lose. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

This ended up being a great game. NC won on a last second 54 yard FG by a guy who's longest previous kick had been 49 yards. After he hit it he ran around doing "the chop" in front of the Seminole fans which I loved. I hate any team that does that stupid chop gesture, coupled with the "indian chant". Not so much because I think that behavior is racist (although it is) but more because I think it's sophomoric, juvenile behavior. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| The Penn State Minnesota game ended up a good one too. After both teams went like 0-13 on 3rd down, things really picked up in the second half, going into overtime. Penn State ended up winning 29-23. | |
