Sheez, what a bum deal for the contract worker.
My dream (RIP) has always been to become a rock star. Whenever I remember that rock stars tour the shittiest and most violent places on earth (not to mention exposure to disease), that dream seems a little less desirable.

South American tours are nothing new for the Stones, who have been touring for over 50 years and played a show to 1.5 million people on a beach in Rio in 2006.
Incidentally, I have this show on DVD and it is friggin' awesome!!!! But then I'm a big Stones fan after seeing them myself at Giants Stadium back in 1994.
But I'd still never tour the hellholes of the world that a lot of bands tour. Especially if I had as much money as The Stones. Screw that; I'll sit in my Bentley in the driveway behind my gated grounds and hired guards.

I'd do things like Steely Dan did after Countdown to Ecstasy. Hire studio musicians and never tour. And hope to god I can write enough hit songs to bring in money lol.
I'm watching that Rio concert on youtube right now. You ain't kidding. Damn these guys are immortal.

I think The Stones are one of those bands you have to see live to really appreciate.
Before 1994 I knew all their hits and I liked them well enough but seeing them live is just a total sensory experience and I think makes you appreciate them as an actual, touring BAND instead of a bunch of studio musicians who make records. I think Mick Jagger is one of the best frontmen in rock history; definitely not vocally (that title goes to Freddie Mercury easily) but performance-wise Jagger is right up there.

I agree, although it was the other way around for me. Started with a hits album that blew my mind, then getting the individual releases, becoming a solid fan, THEN seeing them live--I think it was a PPV concert from the Bridges to Babylon tour--which was just transcendent.

That's why I bought that Best Buy exclusive "Four Flicks"; 4 totally different Stones performances including that one in Rio.
Where they're now scared to walk around...that sucks.

I think that it's worth remembering that touring hellholes involves staying in 5 star hotels and travelling everywhere by private jet/limousine and being under armed guard means being surrounded by SAS type professionals who do their job so damned well that you would never know they were there. (I've met some guys who do security for the royal family and they are not what you would expect at all)
Plus, if they didn't go to South America Mick would soon run out of Brazilian supermodel girlfriends

Dang. Remember the Stones' early '80s video for the song "Undercover of the Night"? Sounds like it's coming to life!!

Sounds like a bunch hype and fear mongering to me. If 72 years of being Keith Richards hasn't killed Keith Richards, no half-assed street punks are gonna do it either.
