Not to worry. Muckie was making a joke and it kinda fell flat. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| Really, I was just expecting people to see the irony of the thread and play along like many internet forums do. Though for me, it often tends to be that the ones I expect the most reaction from that end up D.O.A and the ones I didn't intend to be that way go in the opposite direction. I once had a post on one forum garner up to 2,000 replies from members, and I had never read all of them, but only enough to know that the thread had strayed far off topic. | |

- Why is diversity, exploration, and collaboration in other styles of music celebrated while it's condemned in Metal when an outside songwriter or guest vocalist or instrument appears? The simple answer might be that we are just passionate and love our favorite genres. Maybe?
Some fans see adding instruments (esp. synths) as a sell-out. But, I don't think it's just metal that has these fan reactions. A lot of Jethro Tull fans can't stand their early '80s albums "A" and "Under Wraps" because of the different sound (I, personally, love those albums). I'm sure long-time Genesis fans hated "Invisible Touch." Many Gary Numan fans see his mid 1980s-early 1990s Janet Jackson-esque output with the female backing vocalists as a low point (again, I like those albums). Some people just don't like change in general. Good point. I have the knee jerk reaction too against change. In the last few years, I have an approach that it's the artist's music and they can do whatever they want, but that they have the best interest in mind. I don't have to buy it and listen to it. I will always have their other output to enjoy. It's always been that way. Bob Dylan nearly got lynched by the paramilitary wing of the folk appreciation club for daring to pick up an electric guitarĀ

| I appreciate the responses, Boris and Metal Lady, but I was thinking mainly of Metal artists like Metallica (Load and ReLoad), Megadeth (Risk), Testament (The Ritual), and Accept (Eat the Heat), Priest (Turbo), and Saxon (Innocence Is No Excuse). And there are many others like "Eye to Eye" or the output of Queensryche from 2000 til Toddryche happened. Yes, I agree that "Eye 2 Eye" is abysmal, but I have buddies who dismiss the Scorps after "Savage Amusement" and point to this one album as the reason why. It just seems as though, since the 1980's it's been an "us against them" mentality, and any side step that the "troo" fans deem untroo, could cost you your Metal Card. Fans need to realize that the artists don't owe us anything. | |

You're right, they don't owe us anything. The flipside to that is that we don't owe them anything either and if they release a shitty record then we have every right to say so and keep our money where it is. The fact about most of the records that you have mentioned is that they were attempts to latch onto the latest trends in order to sell more records and they didn't work, it's got nothing to do with being troo, they were not good records I've no problem with listening to The Gathering as they went from doom metal to trip hop/dream pop, no problem when Devin Townsend gave up Strapping Young Lad and gave us the frankly unhinged Ziltoid record and then the subtle Ki because they were still great records. For the record I gave up on the Scorpions after BlackoutĀ

| I like beef steaks. I can have sirloin, tenderloin, rib-eye, anything. I can have it with chipotle steak sauce, bearnaise, pepper sauce, I am open to trying most things. But if you change beef to chicken, I will not like it anymore, and will probably choose a different restaurant. One that makes proper steaks.
That's me with music as well. I know what I like. And there are a lot of bands out there, just like there are restaurants. Doesn't mean I have to eat chicken if my favourite band changes their menu.
And I can go on saying "I liked that place better when they were serving beef!"

| I find that, if I'm a big enough fan of an artist, I'll give anything they put out a better than usual chance. Sometimes, like with Gary Numan's Janet Jackson-esque era or some of Peter Criss's bluesy solo stuff, I end up really liking it and it expands my musical tastes. Other times, I never come around to the new sound, but it's a fun ride exploring different styles through favorite artists. | |

It is quite difficult to buy into "irony" when you have made it clear how stupid these "poll" threads are... - We have Judas Priest discography threads that never seem to go away. It's like a pest that won't die or the Bubonic Plague. Personally, I was thinking of starting a campaign to have all the JP threads deleted and make one all-encompassing "Best [inserthere] of Judas Priest thread". If this keeps up, I'm going to leave. >:\ wrote:
