"Rocktober Blood" (1984)
A year after being executed for a string of murders, a heavy metal star has seemingly returned from the dead - and now he's stalking his ex-girlfriend, who took his place fronting his old band. This cult flick looked promising but the wooden acting, cheesy gore and a bounty of plot holes sunk it pretty quick. The female lead is cute (and frequently naked), plus the fictitious band's music (performed by the early 80s metal combo Sorcery) is actually quite good, so it's not the worst "metal-sploitation" film I've ever seen (that honor goes to "Hard Rock Zombies"), but you can safely skip this one unless you absolutely have to see every Heavy Metal Horror flick in existence.

With my 8 year old this evening:
"Home" (2015)
A dorky alien (voiced by Jim Parsons of "Big Bang Theory") whose race has recently taken over Earth befriends an Earthling girl, reunites her with her Mom, and then has to stop a planetary invasion by an even bigger, badder bunch of extra-terrestrials in this harmless animated flick. Fluffy, instantly forgettable kid stuff.

"Respectable: The Mary Millington Story" (2016)
An intriguing doc about the short, tumultuous life of 1970s British adult film star Mary Millington, whose rise to fame was eventually brought down by constant battles with England's censorship authorities and an unfortunate dependence on narcotics.
Thanks to MG71 for the tip on this one; I'm not British so I was mostly unfamiliar with Ms. Millington or her career exploits, but it was a very interesting story. Mary's life may have been short but it certainly wasn't boring.

saw Popstar in the theater last night. It was entertaining, but sometimes a little spotty. Some stuff was hilarious while other parts were "meh" at best. Andy Samberg and crew will never be able to top Hot Rod, methinks.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1990)
NYC is under siege from a criminal ninja gang so a quartet of gnarly surf-speakin' martial-arts reptiles come out of hiding to kick their butts -- and eat some pizza.
My 8 year old son and I watched the first of the "new" TMNT films this past week, which made him curious about checking out the 1990 original - which I hadn't seen in dog years. As I expected, it hasn't aged very well but my son and I both got a kick out of it anyway. It's still a load of ultra violent, extremely silly goofball fun.

Finished Godzilla: Final Wars today.
You know what? Once you get past the nostalgia factor of all the past foes of Big G making cameos, this movie really sucks. WAY too much time spent doing Matrix-style "chopsocky" and way too little monster time. And when my favorite King Ghidorah finally makes an appearance when the movie is practically over, the "plot" device used to help Godzilla defeat him is beyond lame.
I'm revisiting the latter day Godzilla movies to see if I can figure out why the "new" Godzilla in the trailers for the upcoming "Godzilla - Resurgence" is a "nightmare Godzilla". My guess is it's because of his "radioactive meltdown" in Godzilla vs Destroyah; it sure wasn't because of anything in this overlong timewaster as Big G and Minya waded off into the sunset (literally, I'm not exaggerating).

Yeah this one was a bit frustrating. It was cool seeing all the monster together on the screen but all that "human interest"/Matrix stuff of the film really bogged it down. And all it really was is a remake of Destroy All Monsters.

I actually like Destroy All Monsters a lot more. It sure is a hell of a lot more concise than this film. You could easily trim an hour out of "Final Wars" and not miss a thing.
The highlight is definitely watching the 1998 US version of Godzilla get destroyed in about 2 seconds by the "real" Godzilla and the alien saying "I knew that tuna-eating monster was useless."

"Chuck Norris vs. Communism" (2015)
Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceausescu forbade all forms of Western media in his country, but when VCRs became available in the mid-1980s, a clandestine network of smugglers and translators brought thousands of Hollywood movies into the country on illegally bootlegged video cassettes.
Underground "video parties" in private homes gave many Romanians their first glimpses at the outside world via Chuck Norris, Rambo, Eddie Murphy or "Top Gun" -- and some say it may have helped spark the 1989 revolution that overthrew the country's government.
This intriguing doc made me grateful as a film buff that I've never had to go to the potentially-dangerous lengths that these people did just to see a movie!

The Rage (2007)
I actually liked this film the first time I saw it but this time I found it tedious to sit through.
The "plot" centers around a mad Russian scientist who wants revenge on capitalist society so he invents a virus which transforms people into raving, blood-craving, cannibalistic, deformed animals before it eventually kills them. The idea is that anyone bitten by said lunatics will further spread the disease. But one of his "test subjects" escapes, kills a few people then dies and ends up being eaten by vultures transforming them into...
Yeah it's that nuts. But it's actually pretty boring. The vultures are really crappy CGI and considering the FX are by Robert Kurtzman (the "K" in the famous KNB FX group) they're not all that special either. It does feature former porn star Misty Mundae but since I've never seen any of her other "films" that didn't add anything for me either.
I actually found this a chore to sit through this time. I think I'm just burned out on this whole "28 Days Later", "Cabin Fever" type of movie. They're basically zombie movies without actually having "zombies" but it's the same gut-munching, eyeball-eating, gory schtick anyone with zombie movie experience has seen over and over.
Yawn.
