Yea, I don't think my wife made it to the opening credits on that one. "Deathgasm? You enjoy, I'm going up to bed".
As for the movie, it was entertaining enough. I don't usually go for the horror/gore stuff, but there was enough metal and humor (and boobs) to warrant a viewing. I may have fast-forwarded towards the end though.
: I had written about this on the Deathgasm thread around here:
Quote :
This movie was f*cking awful, unfunny, not even "so bad it's good." The Skull Fist number is the best part. More in "Today I Watched."
I don't remember what I wrote in TiW, but yeah I wasn't impressed at all. I mean, I love comic horror from the great (Evil Dead 2) to the ridiculous (Tucker v), but Deathgasm was just a slog to get through.
I'm also a bit worn down by unrealistic comic book gore. Turbo Kid (on Netflix, recommended, will write up later) hit every note right except for the OTT gore factor. Just me.

"Stripped" (2014)
Entertaining documentary that examines the rapidly-disappearing art form of newspaper comic strips, and explores the future of cartoonists working in the digital landscape. Interviewees include old schoolers like Mort "Beetle Bailey" Walker, Bill "Calvin & Hobbes" Watterson and Jeff "Foxtrot" Amend, as well as numerous young guns making their way in the world of web comics like "The Oatmeal" and "Hark! A Vagrant."

Godzilla: Final Wars
Man, the middle 30 minutes of this flick just sucks. Stupid "Matrix-style" action flick and absolutely no monsters.

Yup. He doesn't actually appear on camera cuz he's some kind of majorly secretive weirdo (haha), but his voice is heard several times. They even mention that it's the first time he's allowed his voice to be recorded.

Yeah he abhors fame & fortune to the point of a phantom-like non-presence. Even hearing his voice would be a trip. I've only seen, like, one written interview with the guy. He seems rather intelligent, I must say. Of course, his strip made that pretty obvious.

Watterson also drew the film's poster, which as I understand it is the first art he's produced for public consumption since the Calvin & Hobbes strip ended.

^^haha And it's quite brilliant.
Come back, Bill...
On a related note, my wife and I were surfing our local bookstore and I made my first return to the humor section in, I dunno, 15 years? I was shocked to discover Jeff Amend is still pumping out his Fox Trot comics, even if it is just Sunday only, and they're just as fresh and funny. I read a bit of his and some old Get Fuzzy, Bloom County, and others. I was actually cracking up. I forgot what it was like to have something so special in the daily newspaper (that's what we called it, right?) to look forward to.

I've had this in my Netflix queue for longer than I can remember. One of these days I'll get around to watching it.
In other viewing...
The D Train
Starts off as a really good black comedy that unfortunately falls apart at the end. Worth a view, but not as great as it could have been.
Also watched 'Deadpool', which I thought was great. I'm rapidly losing interest in this glut of Marvel and DC movies that all look the same, but Deadpool goes in a very different and funny direction. Looking forward to a sequel.

"Hudson Hawk" (1991)
Bruce Willis is a recently-paroled master cat burglar who wants to go straight, but he ends up getting mixed up in a plot involving the CIA, the Mafia, and the Vatican - all of whom want him to steal a long-lost treasure created by Leonardo da Vinci. Everyone involved seems to be having fun, but the flick feels like it was made up as it went along. The silly-as-hell slapstick caper comedy was a vanity project for Willis and became one of the biggest box office failures of 1991.

"Smokey and the Bandit II" (1980)
The Bandit, Snowman and Frog are on the road again in the unnecessary sequel to 1977's car-crash hit, racing from Florida to Dallas to deliver an elephant (?) to the Texas Republican Convention. Naturally, Sheriff Buford T. Justice (and his two brothers) are in hot pursuit, leading to the usual vehicular mayhem and goofball humor. I loved this movie when I was ten years old, but to say it's "aged badly" is putting it mildly. Stick with the original.

Coupla Netflix documentaries last night...
Finding Vivian Maier...
Fascinating story of a nanny that hid a brilliant photography habit.
Respectable: The Mary Millington Story...
Fascinating story of a 70's British porn star that hid, well, nothing really.
Both highly recommended by me.

Just a heads up, it's very explicit. Even for a documentary. It was produced in Britain, so they tend to show a wee bit more.

Yeah, that's obviously not the kind of thing I would have on the TV while the kiddies were up and about, even if it wasn't terribly explicit. It would raise too many questions that I'm not ready to answer yet.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (2014)
A crime organization called "The Foot Clan" is taking over New York City, but an aspiring TV news reporter (Megan Fox) discovers that there's a new, reptilian force for good ready to emerge from their secret sewer lair to fight against them... The '80s comic book and '90s cartoon sensation gets an expensive CGI-heavy 21st century reboot from Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production house. The flick barely has a plot, but there's plenty of dorky one liners and lotsa butt kicking action. My almost-9-year old has been asking to see this one since commercials for the new sequel have been all over TV this week. Fortunately it was available on Amazon Prime streaming for nothin'. He loved it, and it was relatively painless viewing for his old retired comic book nerd Dad too.
