Are there any artists, particularly in metal, that only ever did live recordings? I can see some benefit to the idea of doing so, especially for artists who write their own music in a way that doesn't rely too much on effects or studio-dependent production so as to make it easier to replicate live, plus they can show their true talent.

Well, I don't know about exclusively, but here are a few things along these lines:
A II Z- NWOBHM band and their only LP is live (a couple of studio singles as well). I don't know the reason behind doing this though.
Not exclusive (and not metal, but Detroit rock n' roll), but MC5's debut was a live album and The Frost also released some (I don't think all) of their LPs as live albums.

I am not sure about exclusively either, but other than A-II-Z, I can think of Vardis with their 100 M.P.H. live album. Of course they had an EP first that was also called 100 M.P.H., just to confuse everyone. Also, Blitzspeer debuted with a live album.

Blitzpeer was the one that came to my mind.

A live album was the only thing Stephen Pearcy's side project called Nitronic ever released (D.O.A. Live 2000). That said, the majority of the tracks on it are from other projects which did recorded studio versions.

Blues band The Red Devils debut and only full-length album King King was a live recording. They recorded a 4 song ep after that and disbanded. The lead singer/harp player Lester Butler later o.d.'ed.

Type O Negative's The Origin of the Feces: Not Live at Brighton Beach was a parody of a "live album," they played their set live in a studio and a bunch of their friends added screams, yells, sound effects (broken bottles, police sirens, etc.) to simulate the gig being broken up by a bomb threat.
