Honestly, I like Dime's playing, but I don't really get putting him up with "the greats." No disrespect to the man or his talent, but he wasn't exactly exploding what people thought you could do with the guitar. At best, the last people I've personally heard who seemed to do that were either Tom Morello or the dude from Muse whose name escapes me right now - but both of them are more "effect" players than technically amazing groundbreakers.
With regard to the conversation about Gale, yeah, it's unfortunate that he was unwell in the head. It honestly is. That said, I don't care how mentally ill someone is once they move to the point of taking someone else's life in an unprovoked and vicious way. Keep in mind too, I think there were 4 or 5 casualties from that incident AND the police officer involved basically ended up with PTSD and had to resign from his line of work. This wasn't just a 1:1 situation and there was a lot of blowback for everyone involved. I also vaguely recall reading shortly after the incident that, for some bizarre reason, his mother was the one who had given him the gun he used in the shooting - AFTER he was discharged from the Marines for essentially being too crazy to be a Marine. So, I am going to have to go with, blame the dude for what he did AND anyone stupid enough to actually GIVE him a firearm when it wasn't really a secret that he wasn't firing on all cylinders. Mental illness is a big deal and people should be responsible for themselves and their actions, but if someone's nuts past a certain threshhold and CAN'T be relied upon to do that, I think it's down to the people around them to GET them help by hook or by crook.
