That guy who claims that A7X stole the cover of Metallica's Black album for their "Hail to the King" OTOH, is completely mistaken. Before Metallica you had Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Stryper, Danzig, and likely others doing minimalistic black album covers with just the band logo and the album title on the cover. It was hardly groundbreaking in 1991, and A7X are just continuing a (unfortunate) trend in 2013.

Well I don't think any of A7x's songs are musical plagiarism.

PECO Energy in Philadelphia has an ad campaign about "energy vampires". This image of a light bulb with bat wings is plastered all over tv, billboards, buses, etc. Look familiar?

Except Overkill was using that logo when these jokers were still in kindergarten. I would have been pissed too.

I'm all over the map stylistically; rock metal take prominence because they're my first love, the music that actually changed my life and carried me through some really difficult times. But my very first flirtations with music were classical, then jazz (especially smooth in the 80s), then pop. I even enjoy some commercial country on rare occasion (as long as it doesn't get too sentimental or political). I have many other favorite artists like Wilco and Neil Young that are much more relevant to my current context than any form of metal.
For instance, the last couple of months saw me diverging from metal due to saturation. I was simply getting too tired of it clogging up my diet. Plus the listener's fatigue I've been experiencing with obnoxious compression levels wore me down. So I switched to prog thanks to the new Opeth, and it was like a window being opened. Weirdly enough, today I was in a power metal mood.
There's nothing wrong or new or different with being a fan of metal and enjoying different styles. It's called being open-minded, something the world need more of. For instance, I've had my stereo on all day today during work, and this has been my artist playlist:
Sanctuary Striker Triptykon Spock's Beard The Aristocrats Riot Tygers of Pan Tang Deliverance Warrior Soul (thanks to FF in Unc's thread) Bang Tango Obituary Carcass Orange Goblin Roger Daltry St. Elmo's Fire soundtrack Airplay Peabo Bryson
And now I'm watching a Lee Ritenour concert on youtube. Go figure.
Props to anyone who read through all of that.

It's quite amazing! I only recently found out that it's Toto playing on that record. It has a wonderful feel to it. I had the cassette as a kid.

Back then, if it wasn't the Toto guys it was Carlos Vega, Michael Landau, Dan Huff or Dean Parks playing on those albums.
There was some REALLY good pop back then.
Have you checked out Joseph Williams solo albums before he joined Toto?
If I remember correctly, they were quite good.

That one is unequivocably not a ripoff. Yes, it has wings in common, but that skull also has friggin' BIRDS coming out of it.
I think we can all agree - wings = plagiarism; birds = GENIUS!
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go put a Groucho mustache and one of those amusing "arrow through the head" things through the Misfits skull so my band can have a sexy album cover too.

Saw Winston in concert and he played Linus and Lucy. It was great! He also played weiird experimental stuff that night as well. That is when I was into a lot of Windham Hill music because of Michael Hedges and Will Ackerman.
Yanni's first couple of albums are pretty cool(more like early JMJ) before he went all fluffy.

I listen to everything from Judas Priest to Bolt Thrower to Chicago to White Zombie to Daniel Ingram (the guy who writes songs for MLP: FiM) to Helloween to John Denver. I'm all over the place and not ashamed of any of it (though I won't listen to the MLP stuff in public ).

Maybe these guys should have some "Get Your Own F**king Name, This One's Ours" shirts printed
(For accuracy's sake both bands started in 1980 so I'm not sure which had the name first, but these guys had a record out first by some margin)

Overkill L.A. never bothered to trademark the name Overkill, but the Overkill from New Jersey did.
