Subject: How would you "define" Grindcore ? Mon Jul 14, 2014 12:32 pm
I think Grind is something that comes from Crust Hardcore and is fused with extreme Metal , but the roots are "Hardcore". I mean, I read an interview with Justin Broaderick where he said that the "roots" of Napalm Death where actually Hardcore , but he mentioned many Metal influences to them like Kreator , Celtic Frost and other early Thrash and Death Metal acts , so Grind is indeed Metal and it is indeed Hardcore.
But for the rawness of the music , the lack of solos and the speed I´d say Napalm Death on the first 2 records are closer to Hardcore than Metal, but There´s a lot of Metal on it. They are more "Metal" than pure Crust bands like Doom and Extreme Noise Terror to me.
I mean I had a Grindcore project back in 1998 and did a lot of research on it. If the Board authorizes me to I´ll post a link to this project latter.
My Grind project had more Metal than Hardcore-Crust influences , but it was , indeed , a mix of the more "Metal" Grind core like Mortician with the more Crusty stuff sometimes. Threre where actuall riffs , no lyrics ( just growling ) drums played with fingers , I tried to be as extreme as I could , being Metal and Crust-Hardcore and both. That´s how F.E.T.O of Napalm Death sounds to me. Scum to me sounds a little more on the HC-Crust side than F.E.T.O. , but its only my personal opinion.

I don't get it. Coherency in one post, incoherency in the next.

BTW I DON´T like Grindcore , but I had this project because I LOVE to play GC , I dunno why. I like to play, I think its funny , almost in a juvenile / childish way , but I don´t really like this type of music. growled vocals, Don´t get it. that´s why I don´t listen to almost any Death Metal at all ( exceptions are Carcass , Obituary , Atheist and Death and maybe ths first album of Cancer )

My question now is: am I authorized by the board to post a link to this project of mine ? no copyrights at all , I never registered it. recorded back in 1998 , no lyrics, chaotic solos , fast , heavy and dirty as ( fill the blank ). may I ( post the link ) , may I , may IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ?

BTW Scum is the only GC album per se which I like some songs. I really love "Symphonies of Sickness" by Carcass but I don´t consider it Grindcore.
I DON´T like Carcass debut it sounds like pure noise to me. But I think it was the first "metallic" Grindcore album ever. Napalm was also "Metal influenced" , but , compared to Carcass debut , it was much more on the Crust/HC side. I think the same applies to Agathocles for example. I actually don´t know if I could say that Agathocles has "metal" influences , but to my ears, they sound "metal" in some way. Any Agathocles fans here ? don´t count me as one. But I listened to them, to get some influences to my project ...

The thing I posted by United Forces ( S.O.D. song ) is that I think Napalm Death carried extreme influences both from Metal and Crust-Hardcore on the beginning and still do such to this day , having no barriers on each style.
You can notice both influences from Crust-HC and Metal on this song:

Wow man, I come to a Metal board and no one here is interested in Grind ? Napalm Death are legends to many ... Agathocles came to Brasil last year I think , they have many fans here. theres a Brasilian band called ROT that to me sounds very Agathocles influenced.

I love grind, but it looks to me like you are having a conversation with yourself & I wouldn't want to interrupt.

It wasn't called "grindcore" yet in the early-mid 1980s, but there were bands doing it before Napalm Death, like SIEGE, OUTO, and GENOCIDE (who joined Evil Chuck's band DEATH for a little while, and after that, Genocide reformed, & changed their name to Repulsion). I stopped liking Napalm Death when they lost their edge and went for that soft , clean, wimpy Morrisound studio, and pillow-drums sound with Harmony Corruption.

I wouldn´t call Harmony Corruption "soft and clean" its just more intricated , technical and polished than pure Grindcore. Many people tought back then that they "sold out" with albums like Harmony Corruption and Utopia Banished. They became almost 100 % Metal with these two albums, but in 2000 they returned to the more "extreme crossover" stuff which actually is like Grindcore is.

IMPO the first "grindcore" "album" is Crab Society North Demo by S.O.D. there´s an obscure brasilian band called "brigada do ódio" that played something close to grindcore back in 1985.
