The Final Cut where made up of alot of songs that didnot fit in within the concept of The Wall album or where songs that were out and out rejected during the sessions for the Wall.

When it came time to do the follow up album Roger Waters gave David Gilmour and Nick Mason a choice , they could choose from material that would ultimately become the Final Cut or what later would turn out to be Roger Water's debut solo album " The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" .

Gilmour wasn't very thrilled with the material and as detuned stated it is Roger Waters solo album but in name.

It is my favorite Pink Floyd album because it goes so much deeper and is so personal to Roger Waters history. It deals with the emotions of aftemath of World War II, the loss of his father who died during the war, the crumbling of his first marriage, and the lyrics are very dark. It makes Joy Divison sound like Hallmark card in comparison. The music is as dark and as emotional. Also the song " Not Now John" deals with Waters's hollywood expereince in making the film the Wall.

That sounds pretty intriguing to me. I might have to keep an eye out for that one.

Even though seldom mentioned, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is one of the BEST examples of true Psychedelia and Barrett's compositions were very influential on several generations of alternative musicians. Not a bad song on the album but definitely a "love it or hate it" type of affair.

See Emily Play, Interstellar Overdrive, Bike...all classics.

Piper is incredible and really is the best thing done under the Pink Floyd name. It's the only Pink Floyd record i listen to other than Saucerful Of Secrets.

Not only is it a great record but without it some of my fave bands like Spacemen 3, Jesus & Mary Chain and Brian Jonestown Massacre would sound a whole lot different or not exist at all......and that's a world not worth contemplating.

I find it interesting that Sgt. Peppers get all the praise while Piper, I think, is as if not more groundbreaking.

Both were being recorded next door to each other at Abbey Road studios.....which is interesting.

Sgt. Peppers had more of cultural impact and that's why it's regarded so highly above many of the other great records of '67 (Possibly the greatest year in rock n' roll).

Bumping this back up.

I've been listening to a good bit of Floyd this week and I think my "inner psyche" is back in tune with these guys again because everything is sounding phenomenal. I think intentionally avoiding them for years has helped...it's all starting to sound fresh again.

Animals - This album is just simply brilliant, no matter how you look at it. Dogs is one of the best songs they ever recorded...but the whole record is stellar.

The Final Cut - This one also sounds better than I remembered it. While I'm still more firmly a member of the 'Gilmour camp' as opposed to the 'Waters camp'...I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Going to have to listen to Meddle later tonight....

And I third the sentiment, excellent albums that have not become classic rock radio staples.

Animals is easily my favorite PF disc!

Although I think my favorite track off it is Sheep.

Such a dark, dark album.

Like I said in the LB thread, although we might disagree now, we will end up agreeing on something else down the road.

PF has always been one of my favorite bands, just simply amazing musicianship and songwriting. And, IMO probably the best spacey jam band ever. While my favorite era has pretty much always been the pre-Darkside material, I still do enjoy their more popular stuff, moreso WISH YOU WERE HERE and ANIMALS, I hear too much of THE WALL and DARKSIDE OF THE MOON to ever really have a chance to miss either so to speak. Based on whats been said about THE FINAL CUT, I think I may go out and buy it again Very Happy

RP, you should really check into some of their earlier albums, especially MEDDLE, the live disc on UMMAGUMMA, the MORE soundtrack and OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, pure excellence.

I'm listening to Dark Side Of The Moon right now, I've avoided it for just the right amount of time evidently...because it's just pure beauty.

I've tried DC.....but it's just not my bag. As everyone knows Barrett era PF was a totally different band to the later one most are familar with......the whole prog rock thing doesn't grab me......i'm just way more into the Soft Machine, Barrett, Gong, Kevin Ayers etc than PF, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson etc.

But who knows, maybe one day when i grow up.

It seems a lot of us have needed a Floyd fix the last 2-3 days.
I have to say I like everything but the Barrett stuff. I too am more in line
with the Gilmour camp than the Waters camp. Meddle is an excellent album and my fave along with Wish You Were Here ,which I think I'll listen to next.
The Final Cut was the first Floyd album I listened to in its entirety and I've always liked it.

I also love the Barrett stuff, it took me awhile to "get it"...but once you do it's some deliriously brilliant music. His sense of rhythm/timing in his lyrics is completely unique.

Plus "Interstellar Overdrive" is basically a heavy metal/free jazz tune...which is a nice combination.

I'm still in the "Eh....what?" stage of appreciating Barrett. Maybe one day it will come to me, but for now the Piper album remains shelved at my house.

I personally am a big Roger Waters guy. His solo stuff is excellent as well. I like the Waters-less Floyd stuff just fine, but to me he is the core of that band.
