Subject: Whitesnake Deluxe Editions Fri May 09, 2014 12:30 pm
I've been listening through the 'Snake discography and I have everything but Good to be Bad and Forevermore. The late 80s output is in my collection via the two-disc "Here I Go Again" collection that lumps them all together with two B-sides.
Question is, I've been reading up on the deluxe eds of Slide It In, Whitesnake '87 and Slip of the Tongue and I can't find much by way of reviews on these. The few I HAVE seen seem to play up really heavily compressed audio. Does anyone on the board own any of these and have any thoughts on the audio and the bonus content? Worth owning? Redundant? Bueller?
I have those deluxe editions by SLIDE IT IN, 1987 and SLIP OF THE TONGUE and i think they play fine. I also like the great booklets, the digipack and the extra dvd´s with cool video clips, etc...Worth owning for shore. I already owned the normal editions but i still bought this ones too.

Cool deal. I've been a Coverdale fan for ages, but only relatively recently decided to flesh out the collection. First heard him on the Coverdale/Page album, and was kind of intrigued by the voice.
Back in the early file-sharing days, there was no telling what you'd drag out by an artist who wasn't absolute A-Level, so when I searched for Coverdale out of curiosity for more, I got Sweet Mistreater, which is a very atypical bonus track from the Northwinds album. Northwinds and Into the Light, which came out right after I got into DC were the core of my collection for ages because I could never find the early Snake albums and never realized there was a big yawning canyon between the 80s material and the 70s stuff. I just assumed he went from doing blues rock to hair metal and gave Whitesnake a wide berth for many years. More fool me...
I have them as well and the sound seems okay to me, but Whitesnake (1987) and Slip of the Tongue are overly compressed. Slide It In is slightly better in that regard.
I will say that the Slide It In deluxe edition does not have the entire UK Mix of Slide It In as bonus tracks. If you want that mix, you'll have to track down the original UK cd release (which I also have.) The deluxe edition of Whitesnake (1987) is kind of sparse and you actually have better bonus tracks on the Here I Go Again Collection - for instance, the single version of Give Me All Your Love which has a totally different guitar solo done by Vivian Campbell. The deluxe edition of Slip Of The Tongue is more complete with a robust selction of bonus tracks.
As big of a fan of Whitesnake that I am, I never bothered with their deluxe releases. From what I've seen, those bonus tracks are live cuts already available elsewhere or remixes that I don't care to hear. The Black Sabbath deluxe editions set the bar pretty high with their bonus material. I wish a huge Whitesnake fan would set up something like Black Sabbath Online to review this type of stuff though.
In addition to Witchfinder's thoughts, maybe check Amazon feedback? You're right though, there aren't many reviews out there.
Deluxe Editions in general have taken a really solid whack to quality lately. I mean, in some cases, there are goldmines of unreleased takes, b-sides, etc. In others, you get a bunch of unnecessary edits, studio out-takes in which the drummer farts on the bassist, or - worst case - an incomplete issue altogether that leaves out essential b-sides and the like.
As the series has exploded with new entries, it's become a lot more necessary to really check to be sure there's anything worth a damn going on with a specific entry.
The Whitesnake reissues kind of put me off by having a DVD with each rather than a disc of additional audio material. There were way too many of those packages coming out when these were released and I'm actually relieved that it's been more or less correcting itself lately.
Hell, there's an XTC reissue out now where it's a CD and a Blu-Ray and the Blu-Ray has about 4 different versions of the full album on it. If you're going to do a non-CD component, THAT is how you do it. That, or what the Smashing Pumpkins did with their reissues - 2nd CD AND a DVD.
Any comparison between the audio in the deluxe editions versus the "Here I Go Again" set? I seem to recall some saying that HIGA was compressed all to hell as well.
Speaking of Whitesnake, looks like Aldrich is out of the band.
Well he can't go back to I wonder what he thinks his options are? Playing infront of nobody with Burning Rain?
Not a good move I think..
What does everybody else think...
I think that he's a guy with skills and his services will always be required by someone.

After looking through the track listings, this is what I was thinking. I'll stick with the originals(both UK and US versions) that I have.

I think that's best as well. If you need the bonus tracks, just get the "Here I Go Again" collection.

Is anyone else on the board bothered by the possibility that Aldrich is out because DC is winding down on the touring side? I mean, the guy's not getting any younger and I'm sure he could exist quite comfortably given the money he's made. He certainly doesn't seem to have been stupid with his cash.
Do we have any other serious bands that like to drop the "d" from various words in song titles or put "Love" in every other track name?
Cause seriously, those are some big shoes to fill.
totally dig Whitesnake... been spinning Come and Get it quite a bit lately along with 1987....
I haven't heard or seen the Deluxe Editions.... might be cool to check to out....
I remember seeing that version of Love Aint No Stranger on a 12" single if I remember right way back when....

So, the 'Snake fave another anniversary edition of "Slide It In" coming out. I already own over 5o Whitesnake CD's, have a few boots, 2 other box sets, about a dozen albums and almost their entire discog on cassette still. I think I am passing on this as I really already own the "important" material here. The question I ask is "do we really need this?" and basically, where does this end. Is there going to be also a 35th and 40th (and is DC is still alive, a 50th anny edition?) anniversary release?

I was hoping for more! Maybe there could be another disc of DC just whistling the tunes, Or a DVD of him and Sykes sitting at a table writing the songs while having tea and biscuits? Or riding around town in his Jaguar while "thinking" of song ideas?
It's not that I am adverse to a 7 disc box set, but those should be reserved for a career retrospective (like the recently released Riot sets) or a Live set of different eras, not dedicated to your second best selling single album. I don't think any band could come up with enough good and varied material off of one single album to be interesting.

That's a ridiculous boxset. There's so much redundancy in that. I hate stuff like that.
