Subject: A Nuggets-styled NWOBHM boxed set Wed Dec 04, 2013 11:07 am
For those who may not know, Nuggets was a mid-60s garage rock compilation LP that later got expanded into a 4-disc boxed, containing something like 120 tracks, ranging from bands who got pretty famous and released several LPs to bands who released one 45" and vanished into obscurity.
I'd like to see a NWOBHM set like this. I know there are a few comps, and even a 3-disc set, but they are all so damned expensive. I'd really like to see something get produced that stays in print and, like Nuggets, becomes the benchmark for people who become interested in the genre.
NWOBHM really lends itself to this type of thing better than most other genre of metal, as a lot of the artists recorded very little. Certainly the set would contain your Tygers, Maiden, Saxon and Diamonhead tunes, but it'd also have the lesser knowns and the bands that recorded only a single, an EP or a demo.
And the key would be keeping it in print. Because damn, so much is so expensive.
But as the sub-title says, it's just a wish of mine.

This is pretty great except that you can't get it.
Yep, that is exactly one of the ones I was talking about. Take that concept though, make it readily available...expand it a bit...it would rule so hard.
I'd love to have that comp you pictured though.

That Lightning To The Nations set was readily available until Sancutary Records went belly up. Another good set was the one Lars Ulrich put together: New Wave of British Heavy Metal - '79 Revisited. I have it and it's got a nice selection of tunes.
The real problem you'll run in to with a set like you want is copyright/ownership/rights messes. There are so many tiny labels that are defunct and uncooperative band members that it would never happen. Sanctuary could do it because they had bought Neat Records and Ebony Records from Jess Cox and that was a big swath of NWOBHM artists.

That definitely makes sense.
I know a lot of the companies that comp the 60s garage/psych tracks don't have as much of an issue, because sometimes it seems no one owns those songs...or the dudes are working whatever job they have now and are happy to get some money for allowing them to use the song.
I've even seen comps where the liner notes will specify that they could not find any indication of who owned a particular song, and said if anyone has any information to contact them so they can square things.

I second your (wishful, fantasy-laded) motion for this to happen. I am still discovering NWOBHM bands from '79-'84. Although I do not really like any of those bands' entire catalog (except Maiden and Saxon), they all had those one or two totally great albums early on.

Keeping anything physically in-print these days, especially something as niche as NWOBHM could be a tough task to accomplish. Usually something like this works better as a limited edition, numbered style release.

I have the 2 disc Lars put together, not something I throw on often, but when I do I enjoy it.

I have the disc set Lars threw together (NWOBHM '79 Revisited), all three of the Metal For Muthas Comps, Lead Weight, Rare Metal: NWOBHM Metal Rarities Volume 3 and Roksnax.
I would LOVE a Nuggets style multi-disc set!!!!

NWOBHM is death since the 80s (but we still love it, buy it and play it). Now we have the NWOTHM that we should hail. ITS THE PRESENT AND FUTURE FOR OUR MOVEMENT!!!!!.

That's the one I have too. It was sorta kinda my introduction the genre back when I lifted a tape from Tower Records back in the day. Played the hell out of it till it was warped like a mofo. Since then, I've updated to the 2 cd set and expanded my collection of NWOBHM bands based on that original comp.
While I don't see it ever happeining, a Nuggets-style box set would be awesome though. Nice wishful thinking on your part, ZH.

I agree to an extent but I can't find any really good bands from the NWOTHM so far only like two being Iron Kobra, and Night demon so If you have any suggestions I'm open to them.

The band "High Spirits", for one. And I'm very discerning on the subject since being a fan from the beginning of the original movement.

Yes, some very good ones are SKULL FIST, ENFORCER, CAULDRON, AXXION, STRIKER, SCREAMER (from Sweden), or STEEL HORSE from Spain for exemple. All great NWOTHM bands. Thanks for your interest.

I still have to get High Spirits, heard a couple songs on youtube, and need their vinyls.
Another new band's album that is very NWOBHM-era sounding, and I also need and keep forgetting to order is by WYTCH HAZEL. Their side of the split 7" single with BORROWED TIME is great.

I need new glasses... I read the topic title as "A MUPPETS styled NWOBHM boxed set."
...which would be awesome, by the way.

The price is weird. It went from $1,000+ to about $700 and now it's $105.78.

While digging thru my box of ancient cassettes earlier this week I came across my old tape of the Lars Ulrich-curated "79 Revisited" NWOBHM set, which I received as a promo from Caroline Records waaaaay back when I was reviewing music for my college newspaper. I'm listening to it now and tho the tape itself is pretty shot (lotsa squeaks, fade-ins and fade-outs) there is some cool stuff on this comp. I'm gonna have to see if I can find myself a copy on CD...

Yeah, I just took a look for it on Amazon... yikes. But hey, at least it's still not as pricey as that Sanctuary Records NWOBHM comp mentioned earlier in this thread.

Definitely...also, it looks like there is another listing for basically the exact same comp, but without the '79 revised in the title for the search, and it's listed as being a Metal Blade release (not sure if that is accurate). It's selling for $24.99, so it's at least more reasonable than the other listing starting at $46.
Edit: nevermind, there is a reason it's cheap(er), from the seller description: "This is housed in a new thick double CD box but unlike the original, this case is meant for a cd with a spine. Missing booklet inside"
