Subject: Melodic hard rock recommendations? Sun Oct 20, 2013 2:20 pm
So, I'm looking for the kind of bands that started popping out in the late '80s & early '90s whose sound was too heavy and not that polished and keyboard driven for AOR, but still too soft and commercial to be considered metal, and without the blues & punk influences of the sleaze bands.
I.E., I'm looking for bands such as: Winger Whitesnake (hair era) Slaughter FireHouse Steelheart XYZ Babylon AD McAuley-Schenker Group Hurricane
etc.

Giant Alias Bad English Damn Yankees
Newer bands like Newman, AdrianGale, FarCry and Tango Down would fit the bill as well...

Check out Work of Art. I'm really impressed with their latest. Adriangale's new one is very good.

How about Pink Cream 69 (ignore the goofy name).

I second the Thunder recommendation; very "Whitesnake-ish".

If you want something new though retro sounding ala mid 70s KISS cominbed with late 70s KISS solo albums then check out Imperial State Electric's Pop War album. Very solid rock album.

A lot of what was suggested here (Bad English, FM, Giant, Alias, Heartland, Brother Firetribe, House of Lords...) are AOR bands, actually - that do have some MHR stuff in their catalog, but are still more AOR than anything else. Andy Taylor is a good call, and so are The Magnificent. Thunder always struck me as more of a '70s-style band, closer to early Whitesnake than the 1987 sound.

Hardline is the epitome of what the original poster is looking for, I'd say, and their first record is a classic and essential by any measure.
Although, even though all of these bands fall under the same umbrella, and semantics be damned, Babylon AD does not really match up when you ask for bands like Winger or Firehouse. Babylon AD was as in your face as anyone.

One I've always really dug was Bad Company's Holy Water. I love all Bad Company, but think that album gets unfair hate. When I think of "melodic hard rock" that would be the first album that comes to mind.
