Thoughts on bands releasing Cover Songs as singles?

Why?  They had any number of better original songs to choose from, the song isn't good and it wasn't even well known! A complete waste of time.
 

That video and version was great when it was played on TV in the early 80s. It impressed me enough to track down The Skyhooks 7" single and LP.

Though maybe it was for you, what "Leader of the Pack" did for me when Twisted Sister covered it on Come Out and Play?
I was getting into heavier and faster metal and they did that soft Shangrila's cover song.
I didn't care that there might have been some heavy songs also on it, similar to the first two TS Lp's.
Only bought that LP when it hit the delete bins many years later (and when I started to "slow down" and could enjoy all of it).

I think covers are cool and don't mind them being released as singles...loads of bands have done it...sometimes a cover version of some song ends up being the only song I can listen to by some bands (5FDP for example).

I don't think I even knew that was a cover song till I started snooping around you wankers some 5 or 6 years ago.
