Any regular FM listeners here? This band, somehow, never made it big, although they wrote some good songs. They were, however, a little too sugar-coated, more-pop-than-rock initially, but I loved that sound (Indiscreet and Tough It Out), and still do. I never really liked their 90s albums, and felt they don't really have anything in them that stands out, and all of them felt bland. I liked their comeback album Metropolis a lot more, but somehow, it doesn't seem to be as emphatic as Europe's comeback (Start From The Dark) or Survivor's (Reach), although shades of their 80s sound seem to come in here.
While I still love the 80s synth/AOR sound, hard rock and metal fans would not like it so much- this band makes Night Ranger, Survivor (not in Vital Signs and When Seconds Count) and Europe's Final Countdown sound like heavy metal! It didn't help matters much that one of their more famous songs, "American Girls", sounded a little too much like a rip-off of Van Halen's "Jump", and they hired serial songwriter and regular Bon Jovi collaborator Desmond Child to write songs that sounded a little too much like his work for Bon Jovi- the clearest example being their hit single "Bad Luck".
My favourite albums are still Indiscreet and Tough It Out. This band may be too soft for NLTM, but I feel they deserve a page.
I've always wondered what FM stands for- Flying Machine? Frequency Modulation? FaMe? To confuse matters, there's a band from Canada also called FM, who play progressive rock, and recorded a lot in the eighties.
